I've been reading the Yanmar forum for six months now but this is my first post. Congratulations to all the posters for putting together a really useful site! Now here's my problem.
The right front wheel fell off of my green 1500 D when the hub broke off where it is welded to the stub axel. I removed the knuckle (#39 in Hoye's diagram, below) at the gear case (#34) and I'm replacing the knuckle seal
(#26) along with the stub axel and a few other parts. The problem is, the old seal is petrified or glued on to the gear case, and it doesn't want to budge. The parts of the seal that I can reach are coming off in tiny chunks, but the seal has an outer flange that fits into a narrow groove machined into the gear case that I can't reach at all; I can't even get a knife blade in there to try to scrape it out.
Can anyone suggest an easy way to get what's left of the knuckle seal out of the gear housing? Could I burn it out with a butane torch, or would that damage the gear case? It would be easier to work on getting the seal off if I removed the gear case from the axel tube - will the gear case pull off without first removing the gear and bearing from the end of the axel shaft?
I'd appreciate any suggestions you all can offer.
Here's the link to Hoye's diagram.
