1510d hydraulic lift

the filter on this tractor is located above the level of the fluid in the power shift transmission. when the tractor is started there is a delay in the lift operation which i attribute to the time it takes the transmission pump to fill the filter cavity. when the lift does work it is jerky and the fluid foams indicating air being sucked into the pump line. is there a check valve or something that should be regulating the return of the fluid to the transmission so the filter is always submerged in fluid?

The only filter I have ever seen on a 1510 is at the bottom of the transmission. It is always in a flooded state. Has yours had one added? The later models have a screw on that is upside down, stays full.

Foam indicates a air leak in the suction side of the hydro system. Check all connections and pipeing for dammage. there is a suction air leak.

the suction line comes out the right side near the top of the transmission housing. directly opposite it on the left side is a square plate and behind that is the filter. it is not an add on.

Is it possible you're using the wrong hydraulic oil? Some are not rated and may not contain enough anti-foaming agents.

Ran into this problem last week where a friend with his Takeuchi excavator (Yanmar), which is nearly all hydraulic, had foam on the dip stick, and anywhere else one could check. He was not using oil JD-303 or better. After a fluid and filter change...all the hydraulics operated smoothly and the problem was solved.

thanks for the responses. the hydraulic fluid is correct. i think the power shift transmission has something to do with this problem, but before i tear it down i thought someone might have another solution.

Our 1510D does roughly the same thing - jerky at start & foams a bit. So you are not alone (!)

This just started last year, fall. I removed and cleaned the filter. Ours is internal, left side below & behind the seat position, but it was clean. The fluid is a JD--- equivalent and it is full. If there's a suction leak it is not obvious.

When I get a chance I'll make another look for a leak - could be we jarred a fitting loose.

A suction leak will not be easily found unless it is large. the power shift trans pump does not engage until the clutch is released. start tractor and hold the clutch in Then the lift. If it is the same jerky and foam the power shift trams is most likely not to blame. make sure the suction line attachment bolts are tight. If they are tight check the o'rings at the pump and the trams. Any joint can cause a leak There is a suction line between the rear end housint and the power shift trams.
