I started my 1510D this morning after not having operated it for 4 or 5 weeks. I let it warm up at about 500 rpm for 5 minutes or so and drove it to my the field to get to work tilling. So far so good.

I make one pass of about 50 yards or so and notice that I don't seem to be making full power and I seem to be bogging down. At this point I look down under the tractor and see that there is a pretty good amount of white smoke coming from under the tractor and I trace it back and see it is coming from the crankcase vent hose on top of the engine. Also, I seem to be making a good bit of black smoke from the exhaust - unburned diesel I presume. I have enough pressure to actually send a few drops of oil out the vent.

I think I have a pretty good idea what my problem is but just want some suggestions from the group. Your input is appreciated.

Thanks

Kendall

The first thing we do here is remove the exhaust manifold. That will do 2 things in 1 step-

1) eliminate the common plugged muffler problem that produces thick exhaust smoke, extra crankcase pressure, and a severe loss of power.

2) isolate the problem down to a specific cylinder. If it is not the muffler problem and it does turn out to be one bad ring, piston, etc it will be making more smoke from that cylinder than the others. Then you have the option of working on only that cylinder if you want.

Good luck!

Head gasket?
Have you had any overheating with it?
How's your anti-freeze?

Could be blow by. I had it with my tractor. I had to replace the rings. If smoke starts coming out the breather pipe and if you put your thumb on the pipe and it buids up more pressure when you remove your thumb. It means it's probably bad rings that are letting pressure to release.

I have not had time to remove the exhaust manifold yet, maybe this week sometime. I have had no overheating and the antifreeze level is OK but I do not know the % antifreeze which is in it.

I hope it is not the case but bad rings/blow-by is my guess.

I have the exhaust manifold loose and the muffler off. I can't get the manifold completely off without a more involved project.

No clogs so far however. Is it OK to start with the manifold loose?

OK, I started her up and it was a bit hard to start. After it warms up, it seems to run fine, no cylinder was significantly worse that another and no misses.

I am still making white smoke from the crankcase vent and when I put my finger over the end of the hose, I can feel the pressure build somewhat.

Is it time for rings? I have about 14 hours on the tractor since I bought it.

Is the oil clean? If dirty, I would try changing it.

No, the oil is perfectly clean. Air filter is clean and no gunk in the fuel filter.

I did run it a while yesterday and it makes more smoke as it warms up. I did not put much of a load on it however as I just started it, let it idle and then slowly increased the RPMs to about 2400.
