1520 Price / Maint Questions

First off, I am very new to the tractor scene. I am enjoying my TC55da. But have come across an opportunity that I think I can't pass up.

I have found a Ford 1520 - Not sure of the year yet, I will find out this afternoon. 4wd with 7108 loader. 1686 hours. Tires have over 60% left and holding air. It has been outside and parked for 4 years. 8 Years ago it was purchased for $6000. Before it was parked it had a hydraulic hose leak, but ran fine.

I am going over this afternoon, to see if I can get it to crank. I know I can get it for $2500 (maybe less.)

Questions are. is the 1520 prone to any common failures. I don't need the tractor, it would simply be purchased to fix and sell. I know it will need all filters, fluids and a battery. Obviously at least one hydraulic hose. It seems as if these things sell for around $6,000- $8500. In my mind I can have about $3,000 in it and sell it for no less than $5,000. I realize with so few details there is not much that can be said. But would appreciate any details. My neighbor has a 1510 that I have used. It is a very handy size, just big enough to do light things, but then again just small enough to not be big enough!:laughing:

They are good machines, and most parts are still available through Ford New Holland or internet suppliers. I have a factory repair manual for this particular machine; should you need it.

Ok, I went over to check today and it would not crank with my little portable battery jump device. Not surprised as the battery would need to be at least good for that to work. It sounded like the relays and solenoids were working and clicking like they should.

I did take a couple of pictures.

where in ok or you located they have a big sale up there and that tractor running and driving should bring around 7500 and up

Thanks for the input, I am going to pick it up this weekend for $2300. I plan on starting with changing all fluids and filters.

I am not a tractor guy, and therefore welcome ANY comments on how to proceed with a tractor that has stored outside and not started in 3-4 years.

I purchased the unit.
Changed the oil and filter, drained the fuel and changed the fuel filter. With some ether I did it it to start and it runs great!
Now on to chasing some electrical issues. Thanks for the advise guys!:thumbsup:

just to let you know they sold a 1720 at the auction in idabel ok in about the same shape for 8300 dollars i beleive thursday

whodat526 thanks for the info. I have been looking around and I am thinking I will ask around $7500 with a 5' brush hog. I am also planning on painting the bucket. I think it will look much better, as well as protected. I hate to paint the tractor, but may try to do some touch up stuff.

I think I chased down the electrical issue to the switch. As when I went to take it out it fell apart! I spent a little time with it and think I have it working. I need to get a battery for it. Hydraulics seem to work great. I will hook it up to the brush hog and see how it does.

Whatever you do, don't paint the entire tractor blue like some people right before they sell it. Filters, wires and hoses....everything. I wouldn't touch one of the those.

Here is what I have done several times and it is easy to do. Get a quart of new holland blue and use a brush to paint all the casting material. This is almost everything but the sheet metal and it will look clean but not tacky. It's pretty easy to do when you don't have to mask anything off. Anything removable, like the 3 pt arms are pretty easy to spray bomb too. Good luck!
