I was shredding Saturday and made a left turn on a gradual downhill. It felt like I was sliding in mud. I looked down at the front wheels and the right wheel was turned in the opposite direction of the turn. Stopped to inspect and the tie rod had disconnected. The castle nut had either vibrated off or was never on. Hard to believe since there should have been a cotter pin through it. I reset the tie rod and limped back home. Talked to the dealer and they wanted me to bring it in. I have a trailer but did not want to load it without the tie rod being correctly attached. Would not trust that it would not pop out while on the ramp. That would suck! So, I ordered the nut and cap, which was also gone. Since this is an easy fix, would there be any reason to take it in? What could they do then or check on? Is there any possibility that this could have damaged the 4wd? I was in 2wd when it happened. IMG_0438.JPG

I can not see any reason to take it in.
Can not conceive of any reason it would have damaged 4wd.

Second that. With your low speed and heads up operation it sounds like you caught it before any damage was done.

I hate when that happens but I don't see the need to take it in if you fixed it.

I've never done that with a tractor but I have with a truck and Jeeps do it all the time, I've lost count of how many Jeep tie rods I've trail welded to get them home.

What concerns me is that the threads on the tie rod end appear to be stretched, or is that how it's manufactured? In other words, they don't appear to be straight threads as they would be in anything I've ever repaired.

I was looking at the threads in the picture, too. I think it is an optical illusion though. I'm pretty sure that is the indent from the cotter pin hole.

I'm back in business. Got a new castle nut and dust cap in the mail this week and installed the tire rod. Curious thing. I had noticed when I took delivery on the tractor that there was an unused cotter pin on the floor board. Just so happens it was the perfect size for the castle nut. Me thinks someone forgot to insert said cotter pin when assembling the tractor.

I also had the thread going concerning the 3 point lift hiccupping. After two uses since that happened, I have not had a repeat. Hopefully I am in the clear for a while. After next use, I will be due for the 10 hour service.

Other than these two issues, as annoying as they were, I have enjoyed the tractor so far. I used hearing protection this last session. That makes it quite a bit less tiring.

maybe they put it in but didn't spread it out and lock it in.
