Any thoughts on the difference between these 2 machines? Specs-wise, the 1540 just has a slightly more powerful engine, but that's about it? When we sat on 'm at the dealer, the 1540 had a nicer 3PH leveling thingy, it had Medium in addition to the Low and High on the 1533 (but maybe we sat on the power shuttle version of the 1540 vs the regular synchro shuttle on the 1533?), and didn't really see any other differences. Lift capacity is the same, loader would be the same etc. So is it worth the $1500 more in price that the dealer quoted us? On the one hand, it's only $1500 over the life of a 72 month loan. On the other, it's only 5 more PTO HP. Is that significant or is it negligible? Does the extra HP make it possible to pull bigger implements, like a 6' mower vs 5' mower for example?

If you're using the tractor for more than around the house stuff, get the 1540. The power shuttle option is figuring into that price difference also. 5 hp is worth it. Other than that, yes, they are the same tractor. Though its 5hp, you will feel it on a 6ft cutter. It could play into better fuel consumption, but I won't speculate on that too much.

A few notable things about my 1540:

1. It is the quietest tractor I've ever operated (and I've run quite a bit of stuff).
2. It is pretty fuel efficient when the RPMs are low but when you need the extra power from the turbo and pull that lever back, it sucks fuel like a Dyson vacuum...but at least that extra power is there with the 1540.
3. The Powershuttle is worth the money. Trust me.
4. The only things I'd change about this tractor are:
a. I'd like a light package for the ROPS as the headlights aren't enough after dark.
b. I wish the seat was height adjustable. The higher the better.
c. The pivot point on the ROPS is right by your ears and it rattles. A lot.

Overall this is a fantastic tractor.

I have a 1533. It's about 1year old. I pull a 6 foot Landpride finish mower and a 6 foot Bush Hog as well as other implaments. I have used it to pull out 20 plus year old boxwood bushes that were as tall as I am without any digging just wrapped a chain arround them and pulled. I have also used it to pull fallen trees out of woods. I guess what I am trying to say is Do you want the xtra horse power or do you want to buy another attachment. Good luck with that debate.

By your description the 1533 has the 8 x 8 Synchro Shuttle and the 1540 has the 12 x 12 Power Shuttle. Which could make up the difference plus you have to look at invoice date there was some price changes in 2008. And the additional horsepower. To me it sounds pretty close with out looking up the prices for difference in Transmissions and Horsepower difference.

The 1540 we sat on had Low/Med/Hi, so that must've been the power shuttle version yeah. We sat on the tractors while the dealership was closed, so didn't get to ask questions there. The 1540 the sales guy quoted was 8x8 synchro. He said power shuttle adds ~$1000 to the price. He said he didn't think we'd get much out of the power shuttle.

Still not sure if we should get the 1533 instead and use the $1500 for goodies like a sun canopy and / or auger and / or tooth bar instead...

Get the 1540 with the power shuttle, more gears, more power, you won't be sorry. You can get the canopy and auger later. Might check on skid steer attach for the loader though. Ask the dealer for implement prices now, and after you get those prices, then ask him if they will hold to those prices later on. Some dealers will do that so that they can get part of the sale now. More stuff to think about as the price escalates.:D

We got out to drive the 1533 and the 1540 with 8x8 synchro shuttle vs 12x12 power shuttle. I even got to drive a HST just to compare, but i didn't like it much. The location of the brake pedals over the "go forward" pedal seems quite iffy to me! I was more comfortable with the regular "go" pedal off to the side a bit. I was fine with the regular 8x8 synchro shuttle (grew up driving stick shift, so felt natural to me) but the wife preferred the power shuttle enough that we decided to go with that. We ended up deciding on the 1533 with 12x12 power shuttle. The 1540 with 12x12 would push us too far over the budget, and we decided to be good for once ;)

Thanks for your feedback!

Tue, or Wed at the latest is what the sales guy expects. They're getting it from another dealer in TN tomorrow, then bring it here to their shop, get it all set up and cleaned and filled up, then they'll deliver it.
