Mahindra 1538
I have around 28 hours on my new 1538 HST with FEL so far and thought that I'd share some of my experiences. My previous tractor was a JD 790 that I'd had for 10 years and was just a little too small to handle some round bales. I had priced out a JD 50 series in 2014 but felt violated with the trade in offered. I really had intended to just buy smaller bales and keep the 790 until I went shopping for a new brush mower and started looking at the shiny new tractors on the dealers floor. While I was looking at a NH unit the salesman suggested a Mahindra. He had a 50hp model at an unbelievable price until I realized it was 2WD, but it got me thinking. He suggested a 3616 but didn't have one in any of their locations. Then he suggested the 1538 which was in stock 60 miles away. I took a look, drove it a little and decided it would work. They offered me almost as much as I thought I could sell my 790 for as trade credit and the 0% made it affordable. Since I initially went there to get a new brush cutter I went with the Mahindra 72" unit and a set of bales spears and forks.
After that my first purchase was a set of Pat's Easy change hooks. The 790 had a QA and I liked it but there were a few of my implements that it wouldn't work with; PH auger and finish mower. And at times it was difficult getting a PTO attached with the QA in the way. Really happy with the Pat's so far but I did have to adjust the top link out quite far, almost to the end.
I really like the HST and the additional power of the 1538. And with the added weight of the tractor itself and loaded rear tires I'm able to move more soil with it than the 790 with the same width bucket. It is a bit taller and a few inches wider so I have to be careful maneuvering through the trails and under the tree branches. I was at first going to get the shuttle unit as there should be better transference of power to the ground and no degradation of that throughout the life of the tractor. However there is a female on the drivers list and the HST seemed friendlier and she is used to it on her Cub. I'd heard horror stories of failure of JD hst and was concerned, however the postings on the forum praised HST in all colors. Also my dad had bought a Case 220 with HST in the 70's. Of the few problems we had with that unit, it never was with the HST, so I'm feeling more confident of my decision.
My first experience with the brush cutter was disappointing. There was excessive vibration and I thought that the blades were not balanced. Took it back to the dealer and they spent the day with it. Blades were matched, but just tight on the bolts and needed running to loosen up some. The 3pt stabilizer arms broke once I got the cutter back and started using it. Welded them back together filling in the 1st hole as other posters had suggested. Still working on engineering something better though. My previous experience with brush cutters had been almost 40 years with the same 60" IMCO that my dad bought before I got a license. Sure I had some repairs to it, but it was 40+ years old. I don't think the Mahindra mower will make it that long. The steel isn't as thick and that will make a difference long term.
I've used the bale spear a couple of times and it has performed well, the extra lift capacity allows me to purchase larger bales so that is an advantage. I opted to purchase a Walco set of forks as they were $150 less than the Mahindra brand and this is where I really saw a difference between the 790 and the 1538. I had purchase 5600# of retaining wall block that had been loaded on my trailer in 3 skids. I had to move some around and ended up splitting them onto 4 skids and was able to pick them up and move them to the site with little effort, about 1400#each.
That being said, the manual for loader states that there should not be more than 500# on the forks or the bale spear to preserve the warranty. Also using other skid steer attachments will also void the loader warranty, so be forewarned.
The tractor has started easily and does not smoke as much as the 790 did which helps in the barn. Exhaust does have different smell to it as well. There is some sheet metal vibration at over 2000 rpm and I notice the steering wheel bouncing around some while brush cutting. I think the steering wheel thing is due to the allowance for the tilt? Access to the engine requires raising the loader to the top so that you can release the brush guard and then release the hood. It raises easily and stays in place on a gas strut. Lower side panels remove with a large plastic nut with 2 pins to access the dip stick.

Thanks metalcaster for the review! Congrats on your new tractor!! I am looking at buying the same tractor. The dealer is bringing one to test out this week. Any other advice would be much appreciated.

Great review! I have about 50 hours on the very similar 1533 and love it. Interesting thing is the 1533 is more comparable to the old 3616 in hp where the 1538 make a good deal more power. Can never have too much power.

I was glad to read about your experience with the forks and bale spike. I want to get both and wasn't sure how well the FEL hydraulics perform with weight out that far. I've not had too much problem popping trees and stumps out with the bucket (to the point of lifting the back of the tractor off the ground) so I assumed the power was there. Need to get my tires loaded though.

One question - does your temperature gauge register more than one 'block' when under use? Mine rarely indicates anything and only one block at best so I am going to have the dealer look at it during the 50 hr service.

Good luck and be safe!

I made it a point to check the temperature gage tonight. Like yours it never came off the bottom. However when I first turn the key the bars go through the range. It just may be running cool?

I'm not very impressed by the lack of stuctural stiffness/sturdiness/overall design of the Mahindra loaders, considering the outlift most of the competition.

You break one or something? think in the 4 years iv only worked on one loader...

I'm fortunate to own a Kubota L39 and a Komatsu PC75UU2 excavator, and my property is not in the rough raw state it was 10 years ago. Remember NH is the Granite state.

I doubt I'll be damaging the Max28 ML105 loader as it is an Ag. duty loader and I'll use it as such. I'd love something as rugged as a skid steer in a small tractor, just nobody makes them, the closeted machine would be a B26 but I don't need another hoe or the cost.

Now that you've had the 1538 for a couple months, what are your thoughts? Have they changed? Do you feel this tractor is too large to be used as a mid-mount finish mower on a 1.5-2acre lawn?

At 55 hours I took it to the dealer to have rear hydraulic remotes installed and the first oil / filter change. Yea it was pretty pricey, but wanted to preserve the 5 year power train warranty by having them perform at least the first change. There was an earlier post with the topic discussed already so I don't want to rehash that. I most likely will do the subsequent PM myself, but as long as the remote was being installed anyway......
Still really impressed with the lifting capacity of the loader and with all the SSQA attachments makes this very versatile. I moved 500+ retaining wall blocks earlier this summer nearer the work site than I could have gotten with the truck / trailer. Really saved a lot of steps. It moves the round bales around easily and with the HST I can easily stack them in the barn.
The 3 pt stabilizer arms are still a concern, not certain exactly what I'm going to engineer to correct that. Also a bit concerned about how difficult it is at times to shift ranges, something that has to be done every time you start the thing. Slides out of range to N easily but is a real bugger to get into M which is where it is used for most of the time. It is thirsty, and maybe that is because I'm comparing it to the 790? 30% more hp = 30% more fuel consumption?

As far as using it with a MMM? Seems like an overkill for only 2 A of lawn. Remember too that the tractor is pretty heavy; soil compaction?. Despite how easily the MMM de-tatches, it will still be quite a bit of work each time you mount / dismount it which I would as I would for fear of getting hung up in softer or on uneven ground and damaging the mower. I have a 6' frontier grooming mower that I used with the JD 790 I had to mow the lawn and pastures. I bought my wife a 46" cub cadet that actually does a better job on the lawn so now the grooming mower just does the pastures.

That reminds me about the Mahindra 6' brush cutter. I'm not overly pleased with it. I'm comparing it to a 5' IMCO that my dad bought in the early 70's and was still running well when I sold it 2 months ago. I don't foresee the Mahindra cutter lasting that long. The steel is thinner and you can see the distortion from the welding. Just prior to buying the 1538 I had actually gone to the dealer to replace the IMCO. Picked up a Bush Hog 5' and boy did that run smooth for the 10 minutes that I ran it with the 790. Didn't do anymore than that so the dealer would take it back when I got the 1538 with minimal discounting. Wish that I would have gotten the BH 6' rather than the Mahindra cutter. The tires on the 1538 are 63-64"(?) and so the 60" cutter would have been a little narrow is why I didn't keep the BH.

I'm ordering a Mahindra back hoe today. While I have the Woods BH750-2 (BTW which is for sale now) it is a 3 pt model and I don't want to take the time to fabricate a sub frame to customize. Can't buy just the Mahindra sub frame and woods doesn't have a sub frame for the 1538 yet. In the long run it will be safer and easier just to buy what someone else has already engineered.
