Mahindra 1538 Shuttle
Hi, I'm new here and just bought a 2018 Mahindra Shuttle Shift tractor. I've read the manual but I'm confused as to the proper operation of the PTO. The manual says to engage the lever, then push and turn the electric button/switch to engage the PTO. I operated tractors many years ago (in the 1970's) and I never saw where two controls were needed to engage the PTO. Furthermore, by having to engage the lever first, then flipping an electric switch, how can one "feather" the PTO on without banging stuff in the driveline and/or popping shear bolts?

The clutch pedal would still feather it in. My 1538 doesn’t have a button- just the lever. So I’m not sure what one does vs the other. But I have the HST trans. Do you also have the mid PTO? And or is that the confusion?

No mid PTO and yes, the hydro only has a lever, per the operator's manual. With the shuttle, you engage the lever first (PTO does not turn) then the switch to turn the PTO on.

Ok now I’m up to speed.....the clutch pedal with the shuttle doesn’t change the PTO engagement. I’ve added nothing to your question.....sorry

Not familiar with your model tractor but on my 4110 you have the mechanical lever that selects either 540 or 1000 rpm with a neutral position in the middle. Then you turn the dash switch to either manual or auto position. Then you engage the pto button switch and the pto engages.

In manual mode the pto stays engaged until you kill the button switch or turn the dash switch to OFF position. In auto mode the pto will disengage if you lift the 3 pt. or push the clutch. Electro/mechanical ptos are difficult to feather on & off. The electric solenoid controls the hydraulic clutch engagement and is either on or off. If you leave the shift lever in neutral the pto clutch will engage but you are mechanically disconnected internally and pto will not operate.

It's possible your tractor only has the push button electric switch to turn it on & off. I haven't had any problems doing post holes with mine just using the push button but you have to be running SLOWLY. Have only broken 1 or 2 shear bolts in the past 16 years with it hitting rocks etc.

my 2538 is the same , engage the lever then push the button on the dash. make sure you are at idle and you shouldnt have any trouble. My older 2810 only has the push button on the dash. With over 1000 hrs mowing tilling and brush cutting i have not broken a shear pin. you will really like your new tractor. good luck.

I have the 1538 shuttle. Clutch is not connected in any way with the pto function. It’s totally Indepentent which is what I believe they actually call it. Engage the lever then when ready to start the pto just engage the switch. It doesn’t slam on per say. It is an electric over hydraulic clutch and it takes a few seconds to fully engage once you turn the switch. I don’t engage it at idle but at about 1300 rpm so it doesn’t lug the engine too much as the brush hog is spoiling up. Actually works pretty smooth. Similar to when I had my Ford 3000 and a 2 stage clutch and would ease the pto up to speed. Hope this helps.
