An Massey Ferguson 1540 will have no problem powering a 72" Rotary Mower.
Keep in mind that not all mowers are created equal.
When you are mowing, the gearbox is a big part of the scenario.
Less expensive mowers have lighter-duty gearboxes, while better mowers have heavier-duty gearboxes.
I would recommend the Woods brand rotary mower, Model BB72 or BB72X.
I have a MF1428 and a 72 inch Woods rotary mower. Works beautifully. Power has never been a real issue. Occasionally going up hill in thick wet grass I have to switch to low range instead of the middle range on the hyrdostatic transmission but so what...I still get done faster than if I had a 60 inch deck. I cleared an upper lot of 1.5 inch trees with no problem. The Woods unit is solid. My only issues are related to having a big mower on a category 1 hitch. If I were to do it again I would start with a hydraulic toplink. I plan to add one this winter.
Shouldn't be a problem... I am using a 72" on my 1533. It is better to go bigger then smaller, you can also do a smaller cut with a bigger hog, but you can't do a bigger cut with a smaller hug.
I bought a 5' cutter when I bought my MF1250. The 1250 has the same engine as a 1433 and 1533. It was sized perfectly. I am still using it but it would defiantly be better to have a 6' with your 40HP. When I find a good deal on a used 6' cutter, I will have it.
