This engine is about to kill me... I have worked on it, on and off for weeks now. Every time I fix something, I find something else wrong. I really don't want to give up on her because of the time and money spent. I think i have narrowed it down to weak magnets on the flywheel. The air gap is supposed to set between .010 and .014, I have to drop it down to .005 to get a decent but not consistent spark. Does anyone know how to re-magnetize these? It is polarized to use points.

When I was taking a class at Briggs and Stratton in Milwaukee several years ago, they showed us a machine they had over in the corner that re-charged the flywheels for the cast iron engines. It changed the polarity so they could be used with a non-point coil. A guy from a local shop had them charge one while we were there, but they said people mailed them in from time to time.
Not sure if they still have it since the cast irons have been out of U.S. produvtion for so long. Their number is 800-227-3783, ask for someone in Customer Education and they should be able to give you information.

Weak magnets can be a problem, yes.

Are you using points, or have you converted to electronic ignition?

I have found that even after doing this conversion, old coils may need to be replaced.

I was going to convert it but I have to send the flywheel off and get it remagnetized. I was going to try to stay with points because when the engine is installed in the backhoe the pump has a lot of drag on the engine when trying to start it and i figured the points would fire easier... Today i bypassed the whole coil and just used a car coil. The engine has a working charging system so having to keep a battery charged shouldn't be a problem. The motor started right up with the 12volt car coil so i may just stick with it for now.

First I have ever heard that.

Other than buying an ignition module ($10-15), the only disadvantage to electronic ignition
is an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) attack by a rogue nation.

Sounds like a weak coil.
