Im in the middle of replacing the seals on the right front of my 1610D axle assy (4WD). The axle seal was leaking pretty badly. It had the gelatinous light brown stuff in it (water mixed with diff fluid?).

The axle (PN 194158-14100) sealing surface (where the axle seal touches) has three grooves, looking somewhat irregular/worn, apparently matching the rubber lands on the seal.
>>>Are these grooves supposed to be there or is is supposed to be smooth?<<<

Should this part be replaced anyway? Does anybody rebuild these to replace the sealing surface?

Hi,
Sounds just like the "pivot pins" (or king pins or whatever they're called) on my TS1610F 4x4 tractor. The pin surface should be smooth so the seal can do its job. On my tractor, the pins came with a pressed on wear sleeve that can be replaced. Instead of paying big bucks to have them shipped from Japan, I just used Federal Mogul Speedi-sleeves. They're about 0.011" thick stainless steel sleeves that are typically used on damaged crank shaft journals. I had a local machine shop install them for me. Material cost is somewhere around $35.00-ea. from the local bearing supply shop and they do come in metric sizes. Beware that you check the length of these sleeves relative to the depth of the bushing in the casting that the pins fit into. On my tractor, the Speedi-sleeves were about 1/4-in. too long and interfered with full engagement of the pin into the sleeve. Just carefully measure the bushing depth and have the sleeves trimmed to proper length before you have them pressed into place.

After re-reading your post, I realized that you are talking specifically about the axle, not the pivot pin. Sorry about that. Maybe these Speedi-sleeves will work on those as well?

Don't have a parts book handy as I'm out of the office, but are you sure the thing with grooves worn in it isn't the seal collar that goes over the axle? Collars are intended to take wear, so as to spare the axle. You replace them when you replace the seal if they show significant wear.

i went with the Speedi-Sleeve solution (ordered them yesterday). I did not know that the collars are removable. My 1610D parts book does not show them separate from the axle. The local Yanmar dealer said Speedi-Sleeve or new axle are only leak-free solution.

Are the collars a stocked item????? If it is removable, it is pressed flush to the wheel mounting plate........how would one get it off?
