Im replacing the big right knuckle seal on my 1610D and also adding a speedi-sleeve that Hoye recommends. It started leaking badly when my son was using it for the last month in Florida (he's moving dirt and sand around).
The seal and some other internal parts were replaced on both sides about 11 or 12 (EDIT: its been 15 years!) years ago and the tractor has a lot of "miles" so I guess not too bad. I cant remember exactly but believe I replaced at least some of the bearings back then. I spun the stub axle with my hand before disassembly and the bearings are not making any crunchy sound and feel smooth (to the extent I can tell with gears meshing).
The sealing surface on the top housing is grooved so Im also adding the Hoye-recommended speedy-sleeve this time, which I didn't know was even available last time I did it.
My question relates to how much play should be in the vertical spindle shaft. See the pix that shows wear on the old seal at the outer edge. The rubber stuff is gone on that outer edge where the top housing was rubbing against it. Again, its been on there 11-12 years. With the tractor jacked up and wheel removed, I could jiggle the lower housing and the top end of the spindle maybe moved about 1/16 inch. Is this too much? Do others see this type of seal rubbing after years? Somewhere I read for another 4WD model, a poster said could be up to 1/8 inch and be OK, which sounds like a lot to me!
Of course this may not be a correct test with tractor weight off and wheel removed. And it is possible there is a washer or spacer missing somewhere. I will carefully check it when I reassemble.
