Tractor
1700 Ford
I have a Ford 1700 Farm tractor 4X4 that I bought to repair and use. The previous owner told me the clutch went out on the tractor. I started looking for anything else that could be the problem. I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was empty. When I brought the tractor home I cranked it and there is plent of clutch pedal and the gears are easy to shift. I put it in gear and tried to drive it and it will barely move in forward or reverse and the hydraulic lift on the back of the tractor doesn't work at all.I checked the hydraic fluid and it didn't have fluid in it and tried to drive it and no change. I wasted the fluid I put in it by draining it out and removing the strainer located on the right rear side of the tractor behind the right rear tire after removing it I couldn't believe how plugged up it was. i cleaned it thourghly reinstalled it, filled it up with hydraulic fluid, and tried to drive it and cleaning the strainer made absolutely no improvements to the travel speed, weakness of the transmission,or the hydraulic lift. I am at a loss I have asked several people and no one has any ideas of what to try next but I have been told by 2 people that if the clutch does need replacing it wouldn't affect the rear lift.According to the owner both the transmission/clutch problem and the hydraulic lift problem happened at exactly the same time.

Engine moves the flywheel that interfaces the clutch that then engages the rear wheels. However, on these Japan made tractors, as yours being a Shibaura (painted Ford blue), many have a PowerShift or ShuttleShift system that runs off of the hydraulics.

When you cleaned the filter screen, did you do any hydraulic system flush with diesel in the system? Something is either clogging up the seals and pump piston in the hydraulics. Once fixed and put back together, away you should go.

The Ford (Shibaura) 1700 is a really nice machine. So is the smaller 1500. A service manual and or to a certain degree a parts manual can really help here.

I'd start by checking clutch adjustment. I suspect you should have an inch of free play before you can feel the force of the clutch. If you have no free play you may be slipping the clutch or have it partially disengaged. Why did you have no hydraulic fluid? Is there a major leak somewhere? Or is it migrating into the crankcase? Is the fluid return to the pump blocked somewhere (besides the screen)? Is it returning to the pump? Some pumps must be primed after a fluid change. They are usually a gear type pump with gravity return. Gear type pumps don't suck at all.

Good point. If the machine does have a suction tube, it would need to be inspected for clogs as well.

If the clutch went out, then the turning of the gears for drive movement of the tractor wouldn't work either. Looks like the OP will have to split the tractor and find out what's going on.

Unfortunately my tractor doesnt have a shuttle or a power shift its just a ford 1700 4x4 with a standard transmission. I didnt flush the system but 1 let it drain for a long time and then I put about two or3 gallons of hydraulic fluid in it slowly and I pushed out what looked like old hydraulic fluid to me. I took my time and did this until the oil coming out was new oil.

I appreciate the help on this thing. I dont know why it didnt have any hydraulic oil in it because this is an extremely clean tractor and there arent any leaks anywhere on it. The man I purchased the tractor from was an elderly gentlrman and he had a teenage boy working for him and my guess is he was going to change the oil and didn't refill the tractor and didn't tell anyone.

It doesnt have any play in the clutch pedal. How do you adjust the clutch? Or is that something I need to ask youtube or google?

If you have the PTO engaged, does it turn when you release the clutch?

Also, does the gear you have it in change the speed at all? What RPM are you running at when you release the clutch?

No sir, as with all tractors if you try to put the PTO in gear without using the clutch it grinds and won't go in gear. That is a very good questions I may be wrong but I think you just proved the clutch is working. Actually the PTO goes in gear smoother than my new tractor with the clutch mashed in. Thank you very much to you and everyone that has taken time out of their day to help solve my problem.

When changing gears it doent make a change in speed but it is will stop traveling if you try to run over a 2x4 but I can put it the lowest gear and if I get a running start lol it will cross a 2x4. Basically what I'm very poorly trying to say is the speed may increase a small amount but if so its minimal. Also, it won't move at all if you try to take off in any gear other than low gear and after its rolling you can switch to a higher gear. Thank you very much for your reply.
