You might want to do a search of this forum for this. A number 1700 owners have detailed their saga's here including myself with the 1700 temp light.
I ended up replacing the idiot light with a temp gage...Problem solved. I got the gauge from Hoye as well..
I have come to the conclusion that as long as the outside temperature is below 80 degrees mine runs between 140 - 160 degrees. When the outside temp gets 90+ it will run between 170-190...When the engine temps gets above 190 it usually means I need to clean the radiator screen.
