From 6 year up to 8th tractor will bearly pull. When I attach my 4 ft bush-hog to pto and go through anything thicker than normal front yard grass, it slows down to a crawl. I have cleaned the hydraulic screen and change fluid. Any other suggestions?? My 6 year old is getting real upset with is daddy!!
1700ym-High gears are getting weak and pto is weak??

Sounds like a compression problem. Esp. if everything is freed up and moves easily. Check it all Mower, PTO., Dr. shaft etc.. Brakes free and causing a drag. Doubtful but check it all. My bet and sounds like the Cylinders may need freshened up. :2cents:

I was going to say clutch as well. If ither gears have power, it would not be compression. But they probably have power since the tractor is not straining as much in a lower gear. The higher gear causes more load on engine and in turn the clutch. PTO is on the same clutch which would cause a load too. Check the adjustment of the clutch. Hopefully you have not burned it up at this point, your rpms should increase if the clutch is slipping or stay the same but power fall off.

1700 is a geared tractor, the fluid does nothing but lube the gears and bearings. Even if there were no oil it would move fine.....for a short while

If it was the clutch slipping the Eng. RPMs. would be going up. No mention of that happening and that would be quite noticeable. If the Eng. RPMs. are going up and the tractor speed is going slower then there's not much doubt you need to try and adj. it...

I guess it could also be that it's dragging the tractor down, good call on the fuel filters. We need to change those and the air and see.
Does the tractor start easy in the morning when cold? If it does this I would not suspect compression. If it takes many starting attempts, and has to keep starting it till warm or iF it takes starting aids like a heater or if your useing ether then yes you have a compression problem.

Great thank you all for the suggestions! The air filter is new as well as the fuel filter. When I shift into any gear it has been grinding a bit. All of this started after a screw fell through the breather and made it all the way to the top of the piston! I discovered this after I took off the belly pan and I turned fly wheel and it stop so I turned it the other way and it would stop. So I had a friend who know more than me come over and we started a engine break down. Took the head off and sitting on top of the piston was a darn screw and it had made a impression of it in the top. We removed the screw and he smoothed it up. Put it back together and it fired right up. Engine runs awesome. That is one strong engine to withstand that kind of abuse. The golden question is how do you adjust the clutch?
