I have a 1984 or so 1720 Ford Diesel Tractor, three cyl. which has developed a problem. The tractor stalled several times and just made it back into the shop before we received 18" of snow. It will almost start, but has a hlf tank of fuel, a new filter, just installed, but will not start. I disconnected the fuel hose at the injector pump but the fuel does not want to flow, and I took the cap off to. Should I remove the fuel tank and see if there is a screen that is clogged? If so, does any one have detailed directions?
Thanks,
Bob

Did you change the filter in the sediment bowl. It screws into the bottom of the tank. You can shut the fuel off there take the filter out then try turning the fuel back on . If you have flow there it is either your filter or a pluged line. If you dont have fuel there you have somthing plugging the pickup in the tank and will have to remove it.

Along the same thing Bill said, mine developed the same issue few years ago, changed the filter and bled the air out and still nothing. it happened after I plowed my garden site with middle buster with tank half full. The culprit was the tiniest gasket rubber piece that cam off the fuel tank cap. My ride was pretty bouncy and somehow the little piece came off the bottom of the tank and went in to the outlet pipe. You might turn the valve off to the tank, take the fuel pipe inlet to the filter, put a bowl underneath and open the valve. In my case there was no flow.I pushed a bit of compressed in the rubber hose and opened up the plug. I did go ahead and removed the tank and cleaned it out.

If fuel wont flow out of line from tank, then would have to be between tank and pump: fuel line, valve, bowl or pick up screen as mentioned. It's just a gravity feed (I think) so fuel should pour out of there when shut off is open.

Something else to consider.
My 1700 lost prime when running tank empty, nothing I did would get the fuel up to the injectors.
Had to pull start it with another tractor, fired up after about 75-100 ft of engine turning over, in highest gear. Ran normally since.

You mentioned new filter, so I'm thinking you may of got air in there as well.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

I have had a problem similar to this on my 1910. Try unhooking the fuel hose from the fuel filter. I had a lot of residue in the hose, so I took a close-pin and got it all out. It was a sticky build-up. Be gentle tho, as not to poke a hole in the line. After this, it was fine.
