Tractor
Ford 1720
I bought a used 1720 and was testing the pto driven sweepster it came with when the pto quit working. It simply stopped. Sounded like a slight "pop" I can put the pto lever into engage and disengage positions with the tractor running and the clutch NOT depressed. It does not make any difference as far as noise what position the pto lever is positioned at. Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks,
Kirk

Also,
With the tractor in gear and off, the pto spins freely in both directions with the clutch not depressed.

Hi kirk,

Sorry about your misfortune. Please try to answer to the questions below and I might be able to help.

1- do you know if you have live pto ot transmission driven pto? , in other words do you have double clutch or not?
2- what happens with the tractor moving in any gear and you depress the clutch 1/2 way and then fully.
3- with the tractor off, pto handle engaged "on" can you by hand turn the final pto shaft in both direction? Please make sure tractor is off.
4- with q#3 , what happens with the same test if an assistant (wife or kid) depresses the clutch fully. If no one is available use a piece of 2x4 or something to keep the clutch fully depressed.
5- can you effortlessly move pto handle engaged or out of engagement without any resistance?

let me know.

HERE IS THE INFORMATION I HAVE SO FAR: THANK YOU!
Hi kirk,
Sorry about your misfortune. Please try to answer to the questions below and I might be able to help.

1- do you know if you have live pto ot transmission driven pto? , in other words do you have double clutch or not?

THANK YOU JC! I AM ON MAY WAY OUT OF TOWN FOR THE WEEKEND SO WILL DO THE BEST I CAN UNTIL I GET BACK HOME.
I AM ALMOST CERTAIN I HAVE THE DOUBLE CLUTCH. IT HAS THE RETENTION PIN ON IT TO HOLD THE PEDAL HALFWAY DOWN WHEN STORED.

2- what happens with the tractor moving in any gear and you depress the clutch 1/2 way and then fully.
THIS I WILL HAVE TO CHECK TO GIVE YOU DETAILED REACTION TO EACH STAGE OF USING THE CLUTCH.

3- with the tractor off, pto handle engaged "on" can you by hand turn the final pto shaft in both direction? Please make sure tractor is off.
THE FINAL PTO SPINS EASILY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS WITH THE PTO ENGAGED AND DISENGAGED

4- with q#3 , what happens with the same test if an assistant (wife or kid) depresses the clutch fully. If no one is available use a piece of 2x4 or something to keep the clutch fully depressed.
ILL HAVE TO CHECK ON SUNDAY WHEN I GET HOME

5- can you effortlessly move pto handle engaged or out of engagement without any resistance?
YES. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO RESISTANCE OR FEELING OF ANYTHING "GOING INTO GEAR" WHEN MOVING THE PTO HANDLE BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED.

THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS THAT SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT UNTIL IT JUST STOPPED WORKING. IT WAS ENGAGED AND IN USE WHEN IT STOPPED WORKING. I WILL BE HOME ON SUNDAY AND CAN GIVE YOU BETTER INFORMATION WHEN I GET THERE. I HAVE THE WIFE DRIVING SO I CAN GET ON EBAY AND ORDER A MANUAL. :D

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR TIME!

let me know.

Kirk,

I don't like answer to question #3. That leads me to believe an internal rod along with a detent mechanism that operate a sliding coupler gear is broken off at the fork. Once you figure out answers to the remaining question we can then look at the parts breakdown and see what need to be checked. Just a a very simple check, there is a roll pin that attaches the pto handle to a shaft. Can you check to see if the pin is there or not. If the pin is sheared off or cam off that the handle can easily spin without doing anything. What I just said certainly applies to Ford 1700, need to verify same for 1720.

Not sure if you have a service manual for your machine? If they still have it, I'd be all over this one if you don't. I paid almost $200 for one when I bought my 1715. I Hardly ever needed it but it came in handy a few times. If you end up getting it, pay with PP and don't pay as a gift. That way PP will go after them If something goes wrong and you'll get your money back. I'd also get shipping insurance too.
