180 D Front diff noise in 4WD

newbie question ....

In 4 wheel drive in 1 low the front diff seems to make a mechanical gear noise (grinding); does your ft diff make a noise in 4 wd? is that normal or do I have a problem; 4 WD seems to be engaged and not slipping or jumping a gear ...

We all describe noises differently. Grinding sounds serious to me. my 4 wheel drive makes what I would describe as a whining sound. Quite naturally speed changes it somewhat. Have you tried jacking up the front end and rotating it to see if anything might feel or sound unusual?

mechanical sound is more like a muffled clanking or churning; not as quite as wirring; (this seems to be more pronounced in 1 low) ... for lack of mechanical noise describers ...

I'll try jacking her up and spinning the front wheels; Im assuming it should be out of 4WD (disengaged); then if one wheel is spun the other should spin in the opposite direction; right? Please correct if I dont thave that right.

That is correct. It should do that whether 4 wheel drive is engaged or not. For a second test engage the 4 wheel drive, jack up one side only, leave tractor in gear, you can then feel for any slack in the drive train from the drop box all the way through the differential. You could do this one side at a time so as to determine which side might have more slack than the other. Not saying either has any slack, just a test.

No not necessarily will the opposite tire spin in 2wd reason being is the drive shaft which is enclosed and unseen may be easier to turn (pinion) that the other tire so that cant be said as a certainty.

With it in 4wd the pinion will be engaged to the trany and it will resist being turned so if all else is equal the other tire should be the easiest thing to rotate in that scenario.

Remember we are hearing noises noises can very often relate to drag so its still up in the air but thats the flow of normal resistance in that mechanical connection. :thumbsup:
