Bought a property and an old 1841 with FEL came with it. It was parked outside and badly neglected but has potential.

The cable over hydraulic steering is missing all hardware from the reduction gear to the cylinder and the steering pump was filled with pink milkshake as someone put ATF in it.

Right rear wheel has a small hole oozing calcium chloride.

Pins in the loader are all wrong and fit poorly.

Should be fun.

She runs strong despite the rust in the tank, birds nest in the air cleaner, and no steering.

I’m getting lots of help as my stepson has dove in to get her back up to task. He’s pulled the wheels, replaced springs and brake shoes and has acquired a steering wheel, valve, and linkage. He’s cleaned the tank with muratic acid to rid the rust, then coated it with WD40. He’s also located the missing 3pt parts and some used tires and a wheel. He must miss working in fabrication at Vermeers. He has a game plan and seems to be doing great. At least I’ll be able to get the horse fence built while he fixes the hay mover. If you can find some one parting out a HD 4000 and get the steering unit/column off that might save yourself a lot of headaches. Tony Jacobs might have some parts for the cable system if you need them but IMO the system stunk anyway. Better off changing it out. The one on my 1841 was replaced with a truck steering box. Good luck with your project.

We’re making progress. 4 new tires, carb and fuel valve rebuilt, brake shoes and hardware replaced and steering valve column and wheel are together.

We are debating the tire fill if any. Been reading through old threads and I am leaning toward no fill and tubes. If the thorny locust cause too many problems then I’ll slime the tires. The right rear was to far coroded to save. So I’m very Leary about putting HCC back in them. A barrel weight on the 3pt and the wheel weights should be enough. I hope!

I think that most folks underestimate the benefit of loaded rear tires. All my Tractors are loaded and most have wheel weights on them. Maybe your part of the world is different and the extra weight won't make that much difference. I would love those Original weights that were on your tractor they are hard to come by these days and are usually expensive when they show up in our area

I can definitely appreciate the advantage of more weight, I’m just leary iwhen not if I puncture a tire with the HCC in them. Patching tires is a fact with those thorns and the filled tires make that a huge pain (draining, cleaning residue and the refilling the tires. I think a counter weight on the 3 pt will do about the same and not adversely effect tire repairs.

According to my stepson she’s close. I’ll paint her once I get the paint booth built in the new shop. 4F12A1A0-61EC-4684-9B4E-108F0D850FAA.jpeg
