Well, let me say first that I should learn to never trust terry ;-). He says, It takes a couple of hours, 2 floor jacks and a pry bar. I say it takes 8 hours, $100 in parts, my wife, my truck, and most of all my patience.

I think because it was the big 1850 that this job is a lot harder than a smaller 1430 or 425.

I guess that I could spend the whole page with a step by step process, how it may times I had to rehook up the steering cylinders, or had to get the pick up to pull it apart. How out of all the parts I bought I only used the snap rings and spacers (which is all that Terry said I needed to replace anyway). I have $90 worth of bearing, pin and nut now sitting on my shelf if someone needs it. Oh, you will need to clean the threads as I have damaged both the new nut and the bolt following the pound it back in advice I received. The new bolts are not made as well as the old bolts BTW.

Anyway. It is done, The tractor rides correctly. It was all about the spacers and how tight I kept everything.

sounds like a demonstration of a job that would be worth paying someone to do. It did sound pretty simple going into it.

Sort of like replacing the strut cartridges on a car... after I did that once when I was 19, and I swore that I would never do it again... it is well worth the money to get someone else who has all the right tools to do it for you.

I never learned to estimate that kind of project in hours. How much is that in six-packs? :D

Carl,

Did you happen to take any pictures? I believe that only a couple of people have rebuilt the center section. I would like to see pictures or description of what you did. Did you get all the parts in a kit from PT?

If I drank I would have lost count of the 6 packs. There was the moment of taking the 1 13/16 wrench and beatling the canopy in front of my wife. That is when I would have upgraded to something harder if I could have found the kitchen

As for pictures. I swore I was going to, and the camera was there. But things went so south. I can take pics or the kit, and I think doing this with a smaller tractor (not muscling 8 wheels) and not having left the mower on (did not realize it until I had the steering unhooked).

The 2 big surprises was the bearing in the center was nothing more than a fancy verson of the swiveling ball ends on the end of our hydraulic rams. Also, the spacers ar about 1/3" of just cut pipe...

But, I can talk you through it if you ever have questions...

Carl,

It sounds like brute strength, with a big dose of not knowing what was needed.

Can you please write it up, while it is still fresh in your memory about what is involved? (Perhaps saving someone else a few 6 packs, that they might donate to you?)

Thanks!!

All the best,

Peter
