I bought a used 186d and the fellow wasn't all upfront about it. Come to find that with a little load in 4 wheel drive the front drive train somewhere is skipping gears. At this point I'm not sure where the slip is coming from. The front axle looks clean (no leaks or obvious signs of damage or meddling). On closer inspection something has been done on the front driveshaft since the normal shroud that goes around the driveshaft is not on it. Anyone with a similar experience and suggestions? If so, what kind of financial damage might this be? I knew it was somewhat of a risk buying used, but the price of new is ridiculous.

i think that is the one where the us yanmar and the gray one are different. MJ perterson has done his 1510 yanmar grey but it differs from the us model. I think california has posted a little about this as i think he has one of the 186's others have also posted about them on here try searching for this. Others im sure will give you there sugestions. Click the link to Hoye tractor at the top of the page and you can get parts diagrams and prices on the availible parts.

Your going to have to do some trouble shooting. I would jack up front end and rotate your tires and see if you can pin point unusual noise. With the drive shaft cover not being stock it would seem somebody has definitely had trouble there. there are little balls on each end in of the drive shaft that lock it. Hopefully, it will be simple as replacing balls. Again tho, your going to have to trouble shoot. Without knowing what is wrong there can't be a cost estimate. I may be giving bad info here, your model may not have the drive balls, I really don't know. Still going to have to trouble shoot problem.

I've read here that YM186D has a completely different front axle assembly that YM1510D, its near-twin.

This US model has u-joints in the front driveshaft, not Rzeppa joints (balls in grooves).

The front ujoint in my driveshaft needed replacement before I put the tractor in service. The ujoint cross turned out to be unique, used only on this Yanmar driveshaft which is offered only as a complete driveshaft assembly, or otherwise as the cross and cups used for a single year on a Honda ATV. My local driveshaft shop obtained the cross kit and pressed it into my yokes for me. (Caution - that identical cross kit via an ATV supplier is priced 5 times as much!)

This plus replacing the front axle input shaft grease seal is all the front axle work that mine has needed. Beyond that I don't know anything about front axle internals.

Just thinking that checked the simplest things first is best, could the rims/tires have been replaced creating an incorrect ratio between the front and rear? Are the tires properly inflated? Just thinking that the front to rear ratio is off it would cause it to load up and periodly unload and that might be what you are calling a slip.

I have a Yanmar 1510D a with destroyed internals of the left front steering knuckle. I have found that som parts are simply not available new or used from any of the 15 or so grey market Yanmar tractor folks. Hoye found a few new pieces and one gear was over $600.00 for the last one thay had. When I first got this tractor it skipped in 4x4 also. It turned out that the 4 by lever was bent internally by someone pushing with their foot and it would jump out of gear. I grimmaced and bent it back an it worked fine after that.

Both of my stub axles stripped their threads. The threads are much softer than the nuts. On one side (a year ago), I welded it up, machined it down, and cut new threads. They are ODD threads - almost square! On the other, (this year), I had a new stub welded on and threads cut. I haven't reassembled the left side yet and can't remember what keeps the internal nut tight on the axle.
