I'm thinking or removing (or inactivating) the hydraulic power steering unit on my 1872. I can certainly feel the effects of it but I'm not sure I need it. What are the pros and cons, and is there a way to inactivate it temporarily if I just want to give it a try without PS?

I'm not familiar with the 1872 but on the 3235 there is NO mechanical linkage to the front wheels. With no hydraulics there is no steering.

Hmm . . . I'll have to have a look and see. As it is it's way too wandery for my taste. I have 1000ft of creek bank to mow, some of it kind of high above the water, and there will be places where I'll need the tractor go exactly where I expect it to go, and "within a couple of feet" won't be exact enough. Obviously most of this will be down to accumulated wear or looseness in the steering gear and I expected to take care of that as well.

Hey GW,

The only linkage to the steering is the hydraulic cylinder, I don't think it can be done.

I've noticed on mine, if I'm traveling at full throttle on the road, the wander you're talking about. But when I'm mowing, I can cut laser straight lines crossing 500 feet in the yard.

On the old Cubs, you have that gearbox adjust to take the play out. Maybe there is something on the main valve feeding the cylinder?

Curt

PS. I have 2 1872's, they are equal opportunity wanderers!

I had some play starting in my 3235 and noticed the bellcrank on the left wheel turned back & forth a bit before the wheels started to turn. I was able to tighten the bolt on top of the bellcrank and everything is tight now.

On these tractors with power steering, hydraulic fluid pressure from the pump that runs the transaxle is used to actuate a hydraulic cylinder to provide steering. You cannot de-activate the system, it is either on or off.

After posting initially and assuming the hydraulics was a "boost" for the mechanical system (Why would I need boost on a mower??) I had a look and saw there is no mechnical linkage. Of course there is a reasonable amount of play in the steering linkage, which I expected when I got it, and I'll see how things improve after I work that out. No, I don't have a problem cutting nice straight lines when I'm on open ground either.
