I had read where you could run the motor with the cap off the radiator to see if it is bubbling and using water/antifreeze.....I had noticed my overflow plastic container was very low....put some distilled water in it.....and then later that day decided I wanted to see if it may be using water......took the cap off ...turned the motor on.....next thing I notice is the antifreeze slowing coming up over the top of the radiator....??? problem??? normal?? I thought I had noticed some faint smoke (light grey to white)...that is why I was looking

Ran the tractor today for about 30 or so........starts good....runs good......no light smoke at all......looked at the plastic overflow bottle and it was about 1" or so below the full line......( I had refilled it after the overflow)

anything I should try next??

thanks.....having fun learning about these tractors....moved some dirt this evening trying to get a feel for the fel.......I have a long way to go :D

As they heat up the water will "boil" over as you are unpreassurising the system and it will boil at atmospheric temp. This is probly not the reason the reason is that as it runs the turbulace cause it to flow out the top, like any car or truck the fluid expands and the turbulance caused by the water pump recirculating water will cause the fluid to spill out the neck. I dont think you have a problem it sounds normal to me , so far. If your using water and see no leaks, then maybe you have a problem. Faint smoke is normal its a deisel and 25 yrs old, not a honda prius.

These are closed systems and the cap has to be correct or the coolant level wont normalize, meaning what goes into the bottle has to be drawn back in when the engine cools down as long as there are no air leaks in the overflow system and the cap is working.

My tractor took awhile to get all the air out at first when I got it. I had to replace the tubing and the cap on both the radiator and coolant bottle etc on my overflow system in order to get it working properly, it kind of bugged me the level seemed to not stay the same at first but I got it working fine now so that's some food for thought and until all the air is out you will see bubbles in the bottle just be patient it will work out! hth

I had some cooling issues with the overflow tank, so I ordered a new rad. cap from hoye which was only a couple bucks and problem solved. The cap that was on it must have just been warn out and would not yeild the correct lbs. to keep the system pressurized. Quick cheap fix in my opinion, who knows how old some of the parts on your tractor are. Some of the cheapest things ive done to mine have made the most difference.
