- 1900 Ford Compact 4x4
Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a 1900 4x4 which is leaking fluid. I thought the leak was coming from my leaky hydraulic disconnect fittings for the backhoe attachment, after I replaced the orings a cou[le years ago, actually those fittings were dry. So the other day, I decided to help a friend compact his dumpster with my backhoe. I compacted the dumpster with the hoe to where he still has 2/3 space left. I dropped the stabilizers, folded up the backhoe and drove off. About 200 feet away from the dumpster, my tractor stopped moving forward. Clutch was not working to provide power to tranny. No noise or nothing. I have not noticed any clutch problem since I have owned it for 15 years. The tractor has eaten oil, filters and grease whether needed or not and put in garage since owned. I maybe use it 2 hours a month. So I pulled it with a chain into garage ready to pull out clutch. I got my owners manual out to see what kind of clutch I had, It did not tell me single or dual. It did tell me about clutch adjustment. I checked my free play and had none. I detached the turnbuckle and proceeded to turn until I had about 3/4" of freeplay, reattached the turnbuckle to bellcrank, put pin back and cotter pin. I pushed the clutch in, started tractor, put into gear and it moved. You have got to be kidding me. My day was depressing, I got all worked up over having to replace the clutch, thought about doing it all night and was prepared to get going. Oh well! I drove it out of the garage, put it into 4wd and pushed down on the gizmo that locks the rear wheels. I drove it up to a 3 inch tree and pushed it over with all wheels digging into the ground. Seems like the clutch works now. Don't know how long but it works. I walked over to the normal parking area to clean up the mess made from leaking tranny fluid, I did not realize I had quite a puddle. Cleaned up the mess and went to check what was leaking under the tractor. It was not my o rings replaced on the couplers which I thought it was. Further investigation showed that the front drive shaft had hydraulic oil on it and was dripping between the clutch housing(Bell housing) and the transmission surfaces. I snugged the bolts up but still have a drip. I have looked a diagrams all over the internet, bought a downloadable service manual and still can't find out what kind of seal I have to replace. There is no oil coming out the hole in clutch housing with cotter pin in it. Any pictures, advice would be appreciated as to how to fix my oil leak.
Regards,
David
