Hello
I have a 1989 ford 1920 with 1100 hrs on it. Just recently the coolant sensor light came on and has stayed on despite having filled up the reservoir. From a brief internet search it appears that I would need to replace the entire reservoir tank to replace the sensor as the sensor and reservoir are sold as a single unit. Can I just continue to run the tractor with the coolant sensor light on so long as I am diligent about checking the coolant level? It has had a slow leak and I fill it with a pint or two once every 100 hrs or so. I did have a thermostat wiring issue last year which you all were very helpful in helping me deal with I don't believe this is related but it may be. thanks in a advance.

I would absolutely say to run it that way and check it often. Most of us don't even have coolant level sensors. We rely on a temperature gage or an idiot light run by a temperature switch in the block. I would think your diligence in checking would surely override that sensor. Don't you have have a high temperature/hot light too?

EDIT: In looking at the parts list, it looks like that reservoir with a sensor was replaced with one without the the sensor in '92.

Ok Thanks for the advice. I just wanted to make sure that the sensor didn't also indicate another problem which I would be ignoring by continuing to run the tractor with the light on. I don't know if I have an over temp light I will have to look. I do have a temp gauge.

Erik,

Only in a system with expansion tank and level sensor in there or alternately having an open system with expansion tank you can have a level sensor. With a circulating and closed hydronic system it is very very difficult to accurately tell the level due to circulating and fluid expansion factor. I think as Jim said vigilance is the way to go and you do not have a major issue. I think you have issue with your sender or wiring. Take the lead off from the sending unit and see what happens. Once the key is ignition short out the lead to the ground and your temp needle should peg out. Do you know where the sender is?

That sending unit was discontinued on later tractors. I'd unplug it, see if the light goes out, and be happy. If the temp gauge works and you check the coolant level periodically, it's a non-issue.

I also have a 1989 ford 1920 and the coolant sensor light does the same thing. iI took a dowel and gently poked around the bottom of the reservoir. It started working and the light went out. Must be gummed up or something.
