1920 restart

Tractor starts fine on initial start up. However if it stalls or you just shut it off, it will not restart for at least 2 hrs until complete cool down. Just been careful in the past not to shut down, but need to get to problem. Ideas?

Take the fuel cap off, start and see what happens. Report back on outcome and if it dies ,is it the same duration?

Didn稚 change anything. Ran about an hr this afternoon, throttled down to shut off pto, stalled down, won稚 restart?

Verify an adequate flow of fuel from the tank through the filter to the injection pump. Make sure the filter bowl has an o ring sealing it to the filter head, the spring is in the bowl to support the element and the filter head has the small o ring that seals the filter outlet to the head. If all that is good check the valve adjustment, if they are good or close then do a compression check. If that checks out send the injection pump and injectors out.

Seems like if it was running up to shutoffthen fuel and flow would have been adequate? Would the valves vary from hot to cold. Seems it痴 just something to do with a hot engine?

It ran until you idled it down then it quit. That is different than running till you shut it off. Then it will not start for a period of time. One possibility is an inadequate fuel supply, air ingress to the fuel system or other possibilities are related to engine temperature. There could be other causes that I did not happen to think of. I gave you a systematic troubleshooting flow list that starts out with inexpensive, obvious things to check and progresses to more complex and expensive possible causes. You can guess, throw parts at it, or start with the complex expensive possibilities.

Your fuel tank is atmospherically vented, if the cap does not allow air in to tank then a vacuum is caused by your fuel tank that the fuel pump needs to fight against causing fuel delivery issues. i wanted to know if the engine dies at the same given duration with the cap removed or not to eliminate one possibility or prove it. Rick's suggestion is sound and logical. What is your idle rpm? can you just increase it some to see if it dies after some use. it appears as long as you are running the tractor on RPMs higher than idle it does not die, is that correct?

The one incident yest was at very low idle when pulling off the pto lever and let the clutch out too much (shuttle shift) and it stalled. MOST incidents are back in the barn and shutting it off with the key, like when need to refuel or change implements and then will not restart.

Will check valve clearance wheN I find my feeler gauges. While looking at the wiring diagram, saw a fuel shutoff solenoid. Reading old posts about this solenoid, their restart problems were like I’m experiencing. Will be looking at that and if I can find the relay that controls it.

Check for a loose connection at the shutoff solenoid too.
