Could some one explain how the shuttle shift works on a 1920. Can you go from forward to reverse with out using the clutch. Is there a clutch or is it like a hydo. There is one coming up a a local auction and I am going to take a look at it. Is there any common problems with a shuttle. Tractor data lists the hydraulic capacity at 30.7 gallons. That seems like a lot of oil for a small tractor.

A 1920 with SSS decals on the cowl has a manual shuttle lever on the left side of the dash. It controls a synchronizer that engages forward or reverse gears depending on the shift that is selected. This tractor has a two stage dry clutch, one stage for the traction clutch and one stage for the PTO. All shifts, gear, range, and direction (shuttle) must be made using the clutch. F/R shifts, as well as 1/2/3/4 shifts are synchronized. Low/Medium/High range shifts are unsynchronized. Tractordata can be a very poor source of info, you have found an example. Off the top of my head, I'll say hydraulic capacity is about 7 gallons and the hydraulic pump flows about 8 GPM with a relief pressure around 2400psi. Power steering has a dedicated pump and reservoir. A well kept 1920 is a very desirable compact tractor. There are those of us that think the 1720 and 1920 are among the very best CUT's built by any manufacturer.

along the same line, Does any of you gents know if Fords of that era ever had a power shuttle?
There is MF dealership right next to Ford place in Olathe. Last week I stopped to take a peek at their Bommer 8N and afterward I stopped at the Massey place. I took a ride with their MF-1540 with the power shuttle on display. It was sweet how you could change direction without clutching along with fully synchronized gears.

Another question, what is the mechanism of power shuttle? is it hydraulic or mechanical? what flavors do they come in?

Thanks,
JC,

To my knowledge the 2120 utilized a solenoid electronic controlled shuttle in the 20 series but that option was not available on the 1720 and 1920.

JC,

The 2120 was available with HSS (Hydraulic Shuttle Shift). I've had one since 1987. Great tractor

Thanks Andy,

On the actual mechanism of it, do you know if there is a internal or external hyd cylinder or slave cylinder of a some kind that was timed to clutch before it engaged the reverser gear in transmission? I'm interested in it's mechanism and required maintenance or replacement when necessary.

JC,

Turby,

Would you have a diagram or detail of it off of service manual? Thanks.

I know that it's all internal to the transmission. It appears to be hydraulic operated when you move the shuttle and I believe you can find all the internal diagrams for it him at New Holland parts or Messick's website under the parts for the 2120. Andy

Thanks Andy,

I go to their website for some investigation.

Pretty sure it's hydraulic clutch packs. I think they're pretty reliable and they sure work well. I'm guessing you want to maintain good service of the hydraulic fluid and filter.
The EHSS on mine (1993 2120) lets you change the delay time of the shuttle. Mostly I leave mine in rabbit position, especially in the woods where you need good control on side hills. Nice setup.
