1950 JD \'B\' ? granny gear?

I was just remember ing back a few months ago when i took delivery of my JD 'B'.. I remember the owner saying something.. like ' oh yeah.. this has a granny gear...

Now that I'm stating to play with it.. All I see is the powertroll lever, and the clutch lever, and the tranny shifter... am I missing a lever? ( I guess there may also pe a bto lever.. though i don't recall where it is? )

No I think he's just referring to 1st gear being very short. There was, however, a sort of "overdrive" gear on some B's. I remember my Grandpa's B had another lever up by the throttle that was some sort of high/low trans. The lever connected to a vertical shaft that went down into the tranmission My Dad's B, on the other hand, has 6 speeds, but no high/low. Grandpa's B would move pretty quick down the road when the hi/lo was in "high". I really don't remember much about it other than my Dad commenting a time or two that the OD gear was too much speed for the tractor.

Yep.. mine has 6 gears too.. and is has quite a bit of 'pep' in 6 on the road. .. in fact I was afraid to use it till I serviced the wheel bearings / brakes / steering box.. wanted to be sur eat that speed that if I hit a pedal or turned the wheel.. that it actually would / could respond..

Biggest problem with high speeds on the old Deeres is there is no way to lock the brakes together for balanced braking - if you need to stop fast, don't even think about applying just one brake - unless you want to turn quickly (and possibly turn the tractor over, too). All part of the charm!
