I recently went to the barn and found my 8Ns coil and wiring burnt up. Though a little strange, I figured I must have left the switch on and battery connected for this to occur. Anyway, my dad restored this tractor and happened to have an extra coil. It requires an external resistor unlike the coil there now. Where do I find this and how do I wire it in? It has been converted to 12V.

52 8n ( side distribuitor ).. left key on and burt up stuff huh?

1, get a new set of points.. undoubtably.. they are toast now.

2, don't mess around with a 6v coil and a ballast resistor.. get a new 12v coil. Napa sells a 12v coil for 16$, IC14SB is the part number. the ballast resistor you'd have to buy to use that old 6v coil will cost nearly half that.. then you got to wire it in, and are stuck with an old 6v coil that likely is not oil potted, and is of inferior design.. etc.

don't take a step backwards and intorduce a resistive element and a small primary, coil vs a more moder, better heat disipating coil with a correct primary.. etc..

Darn, did not even think of the points. Happy you pointed me to napa, that is where i got the points for the last tune up. They always seem to have the off the wall stuff i need.

napa points are high quality... way better than tisco

here are some sidemount napa numbers for ignition parts:

Points:
NAPA #CS749
NAPA HEAVY DUTY PIERCED (ventilated) #CS753
Standard Ignition #FD-8081
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD-8081X (Premium)
Condensor:
NAPA #FA66
Standard Ignition #FD-75
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD75X (Premium)
Rotor:
NAPA #FA67
Standard Ignition #FD-108
Distributor Cap:
NAPA #FA352
Standard Ignition #FD-128

Thanks soundguy. You did all the legwork for me. Now if I could only convince you to drive all the way to louisiana for the labor part of it....:). Actually, I have learned a tremendous amount of info on this tractor since acquiring it and it is rather easy to work on. I do not use it often but when I need it it is good to have.

are these numbers good for a 6v system. Thanks

:) do you think anyone went to the trouble to make voltage specif breaker contacts? :) they are worried about surface area and amperage moreso than voltage.

roto buttons see high voltage.. like 8kv and up.. they could care less if it took 6v or 12 or 24v to make it.

the insulation dielectric in a capacitor in that application is likely rated for about 100vdc give or take..

dizzy cap is in the same boat as the rotor button.

Thanks for telling me how smart you are.
