Okay guys, went out today to start the tractor and come to find the battery dead. The key had gotten turned on by the bucket over the shifters during a 2 day storm we just got. I charged up the battery and then I had no spark at the plugs. And also while trying to start it the ignition coil was getting very hott. This is a 12 volt system and the coil says use with external resistor. However I traced all the wires around and there is no resistor in the wire, could that be the cause of the coil getting hott? And where exactly would this resistor get wired in at?

Missing resistor is probably why coils is getting hot... Use of external resistor is probably because manufacturer decided to use coil for 6 volt system on 12 volts.... Generally resistor goes in series with 12 volt line from ignition switch to coil positive (+), Also there may be a bypass circuit to coil gets get full shot of 12 volts when key is in start (cranking ) mode (maybe off terminal starter solenoid)...

Another option if you find coil may be bad, is use a generic coil rated for 12 volts (internal resistor) as replacement.

I looked over the wiring and see they have replaced some of it (poorly) and so I will need to go through and replace some of it properly.

What looks liked happened was when the key got left on it burned up the condensor or points. I bought new points and condensor yesterday as well as a new internal resistor 12v coil.

I will start with the condensor and go from there and see what fix's the problem. Then start working on the coolant leak.

It sounds like the coil is going bad. I've seen coils get hot and you loose your fire. Then they cool off and it will start. I also seen coils get hot and your done till you get a new coil. I can't remember the correct ohm readings, but maybe some one on here does and you can test your coil with an ohm meter.

Turned out it was a bad coil. I started with the condensor and that did nothing, then the points and did nothing but they were shot anyway, then did the cap and rotor and still nothing, then finally to the coil and sure enough that was the issue. :) This coil went out and was out finally on me.

thanks Phillip
