I've recently purchased 1962 Farmall 560 diesel that had been sitting for about 15 years. A buddy of mine came over and was able to get it to fire up. He then changed all of the fluids, the water pump, alternator, glow plugs, belts etc....and it's running great! Today, I've noticed that when I started it, the PTO shaft in the back is moving while disengaged. Any idea's on how to correct this? Thanks in advance!

I've seen pto shafts rotate a little while disengaged. Is it spinning slow or fast? Might try stopping it with a long board or something but just be careful. May be just a slight drag on the shaft when the pto clutch is disengaged.

Npalen - you hit it right. The older internationals had a tendency to have some PTO clutch drag that caused this. Like you said it probably has no power to it. Good suggestion to use the board to see how "powered' it is. You may have a clutch sticking.

Your 560 should be a wet clutch pack with a clutch brake, both actuated with the one lever. You might try adjusting one of the yokes in the linkage to gain some stroke in the brake position. If that doesn't help, the whole assembly can be removed for repair. It's a much simpler setup than "modern" tractors.

Thanks for your quick reply, Gentlemen...I had some thick gloves on and tried to stop it from turning (when just idling) but I couldn't get it to stop. BUT, I went to the side of the tractor (where a belt pulley could be mounted but currently a regular looking pulley is mounted) and I pulled the lever forward to engage. I heard a slight 'grinding' noise but it engaged...when pulled the lever the other way, it disengaged and stopped the PTO in the back. I turned off the tractor, restarted and the PTO in back was turning again.

On a side-note, any idea of what the side PTO (with a simple pulley-not for a belt but like a fan belt pulley) was used for?

Often old farm tractors with a side PTO was used to power belt driven equipment such as hammer mills and stationary saws.

Not a good idea to grab the PTO shaft and gloves could make it even worse! Good way to lose an arm or worse! Sorry, but so many bad accidents involving PTO's.

npalen, thanks for the warning. I guess that was a dumb idea to see if I could stop it from turning.

We've all done things that, after thinking about, we know we shouldn't have. Glad you took the suggestion well.
