It has been advised to me by the local shop that my surging problem is due to governor issues. The question is, does this tractor have to be split front from rear to repair the governor or not? Big price difference to fix if so. It is. 4 cylinder gas, 172 engine, wide front end. Thanks.

Maybe what someone meant by "split" is that you would need to remove the front axle and axle mount. Without looking at it, I can't remember if you would even need to do that.

No need to split, just move things forward a little on front for clearance while removing timing gear cover. I highly recommend having all the linkage and adjustments checked before going into replacing governor. Now I have a question. Why didn't the shop that started you down this road answer any questions you had about it?

It does appear that the term split-the-tractor was misunderstood. Actually what should have been said was that it needs to have the hood and fuel tank removed and the front axle pulled loose to get at the governor. My mistake in terminology. Still should have been advised when I had the motor rebuilt though and I am angry that I was not so advised by the machine shop. Lots of my precious money is wasted!
