i bought a nice 1964 ford 4000 gasser. its a trisickle row crop type, it don't have stabilizer bars with it and i need to know what type it takes for it, its basicly the same as a 901 series tractors, so if anybody has a photo or a link where i can see what i need i'd be grateful.

it's usually frowned upon posting the same question in multiple spots.

it's hard to keep track of all the replies.

i know what i need now, got a piece coming from ebay, will need to make the sway bars though, but thats now a big thing. i really like mytractor, played with it today quit a bit. carb needs a slight adjustment ot it may be the govenor needs adjusted ever so slightly. the 5 speed took some getting use to, but got it licked now, no power steering, got a spinner knob coming to help steering. it already has a 12 volt conversion. starts right up. i'll post pics soon.

Yes these are basically your 861 Ford from like 58-62 that were gray and red. 63-64 they were painted blue. In 1965 they went to the three cylinder engine and with hydraulic driven PTO's and 8 speed transmissions.

The 5 speed like yours most likely has the double clutch with the very bottom managing the PTO engagement and release if there are two sets of pin holes at the transmission housing where the clutch pedal connects to the throw out bearing fork.

The 901 was used for two row corn pickers and other special apps. They can crush you in a heart beat unless they have the wide front end since their center of gravity is nothing like most Fords of that day. Years ago you would see the wide frontends laying around but I expect most have been melted by now.

Some blue tractors labeled 4000 and are four cylinder are older than 1963 because they were just painted blue and the 4000 decals were used vs the 800/900. That was about all Ford did in 63-64 as they conditioned the market for the major change in 1965.

I take it you have not yet had your hand broken by a "spinner" on a tractor without power steering. To this day I drive a tractor with my thumbs on the outside of the steering wheel. Some know what I am talking about. :(

There are no hydraulically driven pto's on the 65+ machines. they are still shaft driven from the tranny via the engine. get into the larger units liek the 4000 with independent pto.. or other SOS units with IND pto, and you have hyd clutches to engage the purely gear driven mechanical pto.

I like a spinner on my 5 spd tractors.. you can run the 5spd like a shuttle between 3rd and R and keep a hand on the wheel. most people drive with fingers outside the wheel on manuals anyway.. and ont he spinners.. just palm it..

i like the spinner on my 3600, makes driving one handed easier. the 5 speed is fun to use, 4th and 5th on the bottom, 1st and 2nd in the middle and the mostly used 3rd and reverse on top. and as far as the narrow front goes, they are not any more dangerous than a wide front, all tractors pivot in the front center. but these tractors are a lil higher off the ground and thier center of gravity would be higher, but basicly speaking all tractors are trisickles since they pivot in the center. i like my lil 4000, i'll keep it for awhile.

The R/3rd is the closest thing I have seen to a shuttle shift in a non shuttle tractor for sure. The worse place for a spinner is the first past disking over fresh broken fescue sod. :D

Some of these blocks are sleeved and some are not in the gas version and simple to overhaul. The double clutch was a huge advance for Ford.

Glad you found a unique keeper and the last of its generation to boot. :)

i made a set of stabilizer bars for my tractor. i'll post pics as soon as i get time. now i need to rewire it, someone put a 12 volt system on it for starting but everything else is 6 volts. fires right up, but would like lights on it, gauges too. have oil pressure gauge that works but thats all. temperature gauge don't use electricity, but fuel gauge does. dennis carpenter has about anything i need for this tractor. he specia;izes in the 1939 to 1964 ford tractors with original spec parts even body panels. go to thier site and get a free catelog if you have an ole 8N or others, you can just about build a new tractor from his parts.
