1964 Mobile Home into 18' trailer...

Another problem in Florida. Where I live, several major roads form a cut thru area from one interstate to another, so our DOT is on patrol always. I've heard from several people who were pulled over with mobile home axles (the lug pattern sticks out like a sore thumb) and the nice officers pointed out that the sidewall says "mobile home use only" on the tire. I think there are tires in 14.5 and 15.5 that are not mobile home tires, so be forewarned. One small trick for the weight, have it weighed before you put on the deck, that will save you a couple hundred pounds if you are on the edge.

poda, re-read my posts... You will see I will not have troubles with axles/tires, etc. I have said several times - THEY WILL BE REPLACED AS NEEDED/REQUIRED! Whew. Still appreciate your input though. I used to live in Lakeland and Winter Haven, so know Florida roads quite well. Still go there a few times a year. As for the tricks about weight, I will not do that. Safety is number one for me...

I don't think his post had anything to do with the safety of your trailer. I think if it were going to weight 2020 pounds and you knew it was getting close, then he was suggesting maybe go weigh it before you put the deck on so it would weigh 1900 or so, to keep you from having to go through the hassle of having it inspected, titled, VIN number assigned, etc.. just for a homemade trailer that if it weighed 21 pound less would not require those headaches.
I built one that hit those limits and I took it back to the house and removed an axle from it to get the weight under 2k. No way was I going to take the extra time it took to set up an appointment, haul it 25 miles one way and take the day off from work, for them to give me a number for the ID plate. I did that with another one, but it weighed 4380 at the time I titled it. A couple weeks later the owner brought it back and I removed the deck, and replaced it with aluminum flooring. Dropped the weight by about 800 pounds.

I have a triple axle trailer that uses those 14.5 rims, and it has 9.00 14.5 lowboy tires on it. They are available, or were at some time.
If I ever got stopped, I would ask him if Mobile homes weren't allowed on the road? I just made a "convertible" out of my Mobile Home, and since I think so much of my tractor, I let it sleep in the living room instead of the bedroom, when it has a sleepover. The sleepover is with the other implements on the trailer.
Another way that they can get you is with the width. People think that just because we can go 8'6" on tractor/trailers, they ought to be able to do it. They can, as long as they read the small print about how wide the pavement is supposed to be to allow 8'6" trailer. I think it is 24' in Florida. Don't know about everywhere else.

I used a mobile home frame as a car hauler for several years. Add lights, decking, ramps and lights to the basic frame. Worked great. I got stopped once by a cop and he looked it over closely. In the end he just said everything looks to be in order and off I went.
The trailer was registered as Homemade. I had painted the VIN number on the trailer as required.

They don't require any VIN numbers on homemade trailers here. I went and weighed a trailer for a friend Friday and stopped by the tag agency and picked up a tag for it. Really not much to it, provided it stays below 2,000 pounds in weight.
