So we have a 68 Ford 4000 3.1cyl gas 8 speed I hadn't noticed a problem that may not be one til I tried to use the post hole digger for the first time with our tractor. It wouldn't dig? So after I pulled out of my 4 inch deep hole and headed for the barn it started bouncing violently? Also my big concern is with the tractor running and the Hydraulics in the down position I can easily lift the lift? Shouldn't the 3 point hold the down position I'm not saying actual down pressure but it should hold that position right? BTW I don't think it's in draft control draft is in the down position not straight up and down correct? So what's wrong how do I fix where do I find the parts and break down or how much to pay someone to fix? Thank you all!

the 3pt is power up, gravity down. you can freely lift the 3pt arms.. nothing holds them down but weight and gravity.

a digger not digging may be angle or flutes. to hard.. or the travel not letting it drop.

post more info.

So the 3 point is not supposed to hold the position it will lift freely?

if you had a 1000# mower on the rear lift, and had it lifted 6" off the ground, and you walked up to it, and were strong enough, you could lift the 3pt to max height where the linkages max out.

the hyd piston feefloats in the hyd cyl mounted to the underside of the hyd cover under the seat. a dogbone rides in a cup on the back of the piston, the other side of the dogbone is captive in a cop on a rocker installed on the rockshaft that have the upper lift arms installed on them. as the hyd piston is pused towards the outter side of the open cyl, the dogbone pushes the rocker/rockshaft rotating it, thus lifting the upper lift arms and thus lifting the draglinks lifting the 3pt load. the dogbone setting against the piston is a soft couple, it will pull free. in fact.. even if it was hooked to the piston, there is nothing acting ont he other side of the piston to hold it in, and you could pull it out just overcomming suction..

Draft control lever down (horizontal) = draft. Lever up (vertical) = position control. If the lift lever was down and it wouldn't dig a hole, It's a problem with the auger. A coworker a long time ago went out to test a post hole digger behind our shop and put the lever all the way down. The auger screwed right down into the dirt. He had to get a backhoe to dig it out. Keep the RPMs up and let it down slow. Check the point. If the lift is bouncing bad, there's a problem with the linkage and or oil bypassing. Oring kit is cheap, less than $10, but not looking at I couldn't tell what else is wrong.
