1970 2520 gas labors starting

hey guys, I have a 2520 gas with a new battery, cables, and I disassembled the starter, cleaned it and replaced the brushes. well, it labors pretty hard while cranking it over...it always starts but you would think it would not . not being familiar with these tractors I almost wonder if it is just how it is. I don't think it will start in cold weather though. I may just try and post a video so people who know these tractors can tell me if it is o.k. .... also if you stall it when its warm you always have to choke it(VERY briefly) for it to fire up and I believe that is due to the slow crank over speed not being enough to draw the fuel out of the carb without the additional vacuum the choke butterfly supplies. any ideas?

I would check the starter voltage while cranking the engine. Post what you get.

My guess is hyd pump is trying to build pressure during engine starting. You can rapidly move steering wheel from side to side while attempting to start engine to help relieve hyd pressure therefore lowering stress on starter. JD offered 2 different kits to help alleviate this problem. Cheaper kit costs about $15 and is pictured below. More expensive kit is electronically controlled. Kit part number(parts key 6) is determined by which hyd pump your tractor has.

Wow, good info. there must have been complaints about this for Deere to have a kit. I did a draw test with a clamp on amp meter and it sure does draw the juice---483 amps cranking, pulled plugs and still 320 ish. I would have to agree the problem is hydraulic. I bought this tractor and started it once to get it on the trailer and once to get it off and into the shop where I pulled it all apart, installed a 8 piston pump(I plan on putting a loader on it) serviced everything, did a valve job, got everything on the tractor working like factory. Paint, tires, rim guard along with a bunch of other things. tractor runs and looks GREAT(ONLY 1703 HRS ON IT). if this is how they are and it always starts then I am fine with it.........was wondering of a high torque starter also??

Did you try attempting to start while rapidly moving steering wheel from side to side?????????????????????????????????

JD tractors with CC hyd systems have a long history of hyd pump causing hard starting way back to the late 60's early 70's.

The hard stating is caused because the stroke control valve in hyd pump with 1000's hrs of use doesn't function as well as when it rolled off the assembly line.

I have not tried that yet, I will though....the 8 piston pump I installed is a re-man with zero hrs. on it. anyone looking for a 4 piston with 1700 hrs. on it??
