I’ve been working on a friends newly acquired sears tractor with the big ole cast iron briggs.
It was constantly stalling after operating on hot days, on cooler days it ran fine.
I suspected a bad condenser and replaced it but the problem was still there, so I ordered a new
Magneto which is now electronic.
The instructions are quite clear and the coil is clearly marked telling you which side faces the
engine and which side faces out.
However if installed as instructed there is no spark!!
If you turn the coil around contrary to instructions there is spark and the engine runs fine.
Converting these old cast iron engines to pointless magnetron is quick & easy. The cost for coil is only $55.00

the magneto was probably not made in a Country that enforces quality control.. I had to change the magneto on mine, and had no problem, it was made in Italy. anyway, this was on a Murray tractor that used a 19HP Briggs horizontally opposed cast iron engine, and wow, that flywheel was heavy, it must have been 25LBS.. that engine don't shake because of the horizontally opposed cylinders firing at the same time.. a drawback is the valves are underhead valves, and would need to be ground to adjust the clearances.. still, I like this one much better than the shaker v twins..
