I have a 1974 Massey 165 Diesel that I picked up 25 years ago. I don't think it's humanly possible to kill this tractor. I had to put a clutch in it just after it was purchased which was the only major expense that occurred. The front end is loose as it could use a few(many) tie rod ends and I have absolutely no brakes except for the loader bucket. Looks like a major job to do the brakes at least not something I'd be capable of doing. The one nagging problem I continued to have is with the steering. What happened many years ago was the shaft on the steering cylinder broke where the pin goes through the hole. A closer look revealed that the hole in the casting was worn out of round and a piece was broken out on the upper hole of the casting. The pin would still go through but there was a lot of play. I've had a new shaft and pin made and it would only last less than a year because the play in the casting would allow the pin to move and would cause the hole in the shaft to become oblong and eventually break. The proper fix would be to replace the casting ..major work, so I tried something different.. I sent the steering cylinder to a machine shop and had them make a shaft that was longer so that it would through the casting and make contact with the loader frame. I had them thread the last inch so I could install a nut. I also enlarged the hole through the casting by filing to allow for some side to side movement as the steering cylinder operates. It's now been five years and it's still working!
Just thought I'd pass this on and would be interested if anyone else had a similar problem and how they cured it
BTW..I just stumbled upon this site as I'm in the market for a newer tractor and was doing some research. Don't think I can part with my old girl though. I just want a heated cab and 4WD.Lots of good info here and I've spent many hours reading over the last seveal days.
