Backhoe 1977 ford 550 backhoe loader 3 cy 201 diesel

New problem.... I just rebuilt the engine on my backhoe myself, new injector pump, only an hours run time. Problem is the Lucas CAV pump is spraying fuel out of the return line plate (where the banjo bolt plate connects to the pump itself). The backhoe is running but no fuel is coming out of the return line on top of the injectors that goes to the top of each injector and on to the fuel tank. I assume there is a blockage somewhere maybe from the return line to the fuel filter? Anyone with any knowledge befor I start tearing things down?

MAKE SURE the fuel is coming from behind the plate{gasket} & not at the "knob" that sticks out & accepts the banjo connector..
Some plates are aluminum & break right there AT the "knob".. where it connects to the flat plate..
Also check you have the correct copper gaskets in place.. they should fit inside the "lip" on the side plate..
Do you have the correct banjo BOLT?? it should be wide open, no orifice.. just 2 big holes..
Its possible the gasket on the cover has failed.. there was a service bulletin about "bad gaskets" swelling..
With all that checked.. just blow compressed air from that line, back to the tank.. REMOVE THE CAP.!!!
THATS another thing.. if the vent is plugged[cap] it will pressurize the system..

Yes it is spraying out from behind the plate....very obvious and under pressure. This was a new injector and nothing has been changed. It was running fine until this. I did recently replace the fuel tilter and a new return line from the injector (banjo bolt) to the filter but was running ok....no leaks till now. I will pull the return line off and blow it thru to check for an obstruction.....thanks for the advice....Tim

When you replaced the fuel filter.. does it have a bottom bowl w/ a long screw in the center, sandwiching the filter??
MAKE SURE you had put the Oring UP IN the filter head & NOT ON the filter.. as THAT will cause all sorts of flow problems..
