Ford 1900 4X4
OK hope you all can help me with my problem. Just closed on a 10 acre parcel with farm house and a working serviced 1980 Ford 1900 30hp tractor came with the property. . Can someone go thru a start and shut off procedure with me? While both shifters were in Neutral I turn key 1/2 wat to engage glow plugs. 2 red lights on tach were lit . no light went off to indicate glow plugs were ready Any how waited 30 or so seconds and fires right up. drive thru gears fine, Loader works fine but it will not shut off when I turn key Off????? any special procedure?? Any info on engagement of 4wd would be appreciated or if someone has a scanned to PDF owners/ maintenance/ repair manual it would be appreciated. I am going to d a fluid change this coming week. The shutting off thing had me stumped. Had to stall it out to get it to shut down.

Thank You so Much

Jason

shut down the throttle to turn off. the tractor needs electrical power only to start and light the dash lights.

The only to shut off a diesel tractor is to shut off the fuel supply. To do this on your tractor is like said above, push the throttle lever all the way (UP) as far as it will go. Tractor will run out of gas and stop. REMEMBER to turn off the key if you have not done before pushing the lever up because the key has four functions.
1) Turn it counter clockwise to activate glow plugs. (all the way counter clockwise about 1/4 turn until it stops and hold it there for about 20 to 30 seconds to pre heat the plugs)
2) Move the throttle lever down about 1/3 way down and then start tractor. 1/3 way down gets you about 1000 to 1500 RPM on start up. Warm up a minute or two.
3) After starting tractor leave the key on an this is the only way the charging system will work.
4) Be sure to turn key back off after shutting down the tractor because it will leave the battery (electrical system) powered up and will run down the battery over night.

I think you should read the owners manual before using the tractor to make sure you do it correctly. Or ask more questions here and tell up how much experiance you have with opperating farm equipment. Learning by doing is not always the best way to begin.

You can download a PDF file from New Holland for about $15.78. That's a bargain.

As a 1900 owner my self take Jims advice and down load the operators manual. Not only does it tell you how to safely operate the tractor and what all the controls do it also tells you where to check all the fluid levels. And it tells what fluids to use and where the drains are and what the capacities are. You will love this little work horse.

I have this exact same tractor. And love it! Just like they said above, push the throttle all the way up, to starve it out to kill it. Starting it can be tricky, at least it is for mine. I turn and hold the key to the left, to heat the glow plugs, for about 35 seconds. Pull the throttle halfway down, and then crank it til she starts. Sometimes I have to fiddle with the throttle while I do this, but if it has been plugged in, it will fire up right away.
The one thing that you will run into, is parts availability, and high parts prices. They can be scary. I have a workshop manual on CD, that I load on my computer.. I don't know if I can email it to you, but if you want, you can PM me your email address, and I'll send it to you. Enjoy
