Tractor
1985 Ford 1710 4WD
Need to locate a replacement head or complete engine to repair or replace my Shibuara 3 cylinder diesel. I have been searching for quite some time, almost a year, with no luck.

So... anyone know of a source for a replacement head or engine? I have also been given serious thought to trying to locate a engine that could be swapped into this tractor. Anyone know of suitable engine to drop in, or have any experience in attempting to do such a swap?

The main use of the tractor is it's loader around the property, and maybe a couple hours a year to till the garden - so I would even consider a gas engine if I could find a suitable engine to swap in...

Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated!

The 1720, both Ford, and later NH, was one of the most popular tractors they built in recent history. I don't know for sure, but it's possible there could be more parts available for it, if it will work for your 1710.

CNH dealer can't get you your parts? Messicks can get you a complete head for $1911.11.

My local dealer can order me a new head for around that price, I just hate to spend so much on a 20+ year old tractor. The additional cost of rings, bearing, gaskets, etc would push the cost in the neighborhood of $3000 - and that is quite a sum for this age of tractor.

With the popularity of these little tractors, I have been very surprised that used parts and aftermarket parts are so hard to come by. I wonder if there is a source of information on what engines might interchange with this frame? I know there is information available for automobiles...

Any suggestions would be appreciated

These tractor just don't break much. I had one and I expect that most of them are still running and haven't created a supply of used heads. There are probably a few aroung though. Have you tried the lard salvage yards?
