1986 Ford 1710 4x4 w/loader

I am looking for a compact tractor for small horse farm maintenance and snow removal. I saw a 1986 Ford 1710 with a loader and 4x4 for $5850. It looks used and is for sale by an excavation company. What kind of questions should I be asking aside from the obvious like how many hours and how many owners?

Maintenance would be a good thing to ask about but you may or may not get a truthful answer.

You should be able to tell a lot by how it looks and how it feels when you try it out.

By the way, that sounds like a great price for that tractor with a FEL.

sale by an excavation company. This may be a good thing or a bad thing. was it over worked , doing jobs it was not intended to do? what shape is the rest of there equipment in? Do they service there own equipment the way they should?

Just bought two used tractors. Contractor used? Check clutch, employees like to ride clutch and wear out. Check trans and axle fluids. If foamy they have not been changed. Look in air cleaner, take it apart. Was it really serviced well. Check each brake separately. Have found home owners worse than contractors at servicing equipment. You never really know what you have till you get it home and spend lots of time checking. Good luck.

Just bought 1710 4WD w/ 770B loader and a grader blade. 1800 hours needs cosmetic work, lights, seat, small things. Tires near new all around. Hoses on loader will not last many years. Parked outside. $5500 in central Calif. Not well maintained by home owner on 5 acres with horses.
