I have recently come into owner ship of my grandfather's tractor. It has been pretty much sitting up since he passed away in 2007. At some point the exhaust rusted off and water entered the engine. The engine will not turn over. I'm trying to find out if it would be better to part this tractor out or try and repair it. I could really use a running tractor. I'm fairly mechanically inclined but I don't have much experience with diesel motors. Any help in the the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help or information.

It all depends on how much water got into the engine and how much damage it did. I would remove the injectors and fill the cylinders with marvel mystery oil and let it sit for about a week. Use a breaker bar on the front of the crank to try to turn the engine. If you can get it freed up you should be able to get it running. It may use some oil after you first get it running but hopefully will seal up. If you can't get the engine freed up I would part it out. New parts for these tractors are expensive and getting harder to find. Keep this in mind if you decide to try to repair it. Atf mixed 50-50 with diesel works (some say better) than the mystery oil. About any light oil and asolvent, given about a week work, if anything will work.

You may also have water in the crankcase. Do check and change if needed.

The key is gentle. Forcing may pop it free, but it can break rings and ring lands. That's "bad". You can turn the engine from the crank bolt, but it will loosen one way and might snap off the other way. You can engage the pto and with trans in N, turn the engine by turning the pto shaft. Use an old shaft or coupler so you don't bugger up the splines. You can also turn the engine with the trans in 4th by rocking the tractor foreward and back.

Or pull the starter and use a bar on the ring gear teeth - lots of leverage and unlikely to break, the way a crank bolt might.
Good luck, and yes, be patient. Some guys pull the head and try to jar the pistons loose with a hammer and wood block.
