What's a 1987 Ford 1910 w/ FEL worth? It's suppose to be very clean, have good rubber, wheel weights, and only 850 hours... The guy said to "make me an offer".

Thanks!

Billboe, we need a lot more information than what you gave to make any definitive price calculation.

It sounds like you haven't seen the tractor and my estimation of a tractor I haven't seen is that it's "scrap metal" until I see it and operate it. 850 hours is only slightly more than 50 hours per year, so a tractor like that should operate like a new one and if it has been outside, it may look bad, but be perfect. You said it has wheel weights and an FEL. I'm assuming that means it does not have 4WD. If you have ever tried to operate a small tractor with a loader and no 4WD, you will see it's alot like "herding cats" on unlevel ground. See if you can get a little more info and some time in the seat. Also, you can search this forum and others for similar sized tractors to get a good idea of the prices.

JimI,

Thanks for the reply... You are correct, I haven't seen the tractor. I talked to the owner and he said it was "perfect". Also, sorry, I forgot to mention that IS a 4WD!

I did do a few searches on the forum as well as on the web and have somewhat of an idea (range from $7.5K to $14K). However, my hope was to find someone here that has more current/direct information.

Thanks again!

People often use the "make me an offer" line because they think someone will offer them a higher price or they honestly don't know and are too "lazy" to do the research required to set a decent price. You seem to know the price range (although I'd set $9k as my maximum). First, operate the tractor (get it good and warmed up - 15 to 20 min work), then offer the guy $5k. He will either take it or make you a counter-offer and you will know his bottom line.

Just my two-cents worth on playing "tractor price poker"

Strange... I replied to this post already, but, it didn't seem to show up. Forgive me if this is a repeat...

Thanks for the info JimI. Your max figure jives with a tractor price guide website I just found. These are the numbers from the site for an '86 1910 4wd (tractor only I presume):

Estimated Average Value Less Repairs
Premium $7,935
Good $7,149
Fair $6,315
Approx. Retail Price New: $11,515

It seems to be a pretty cool service. They let you perform 3 lookups per day or unlimited lookups if you register (free). The site address is:

http://www.machinerylink.com/resources/uevg/default.asp

I'm not sure of the accuracy, but, it seems reasonable to me!?!?

Thanks again and hope you all find the price guide useful (btw, I have no connections to the site... I found it with a yahoo search...).

It looks like you have a good place to start with your price estimates and thanks for the link. I'd never seen that site before. Don't forget that you are looking at a 15 yr old tractor. All kinds of rubber seals, bearings, and even tire rubber may be deteriorated significantly. Parts may even be less and less available for a tractor of that age. Remember that when you are looking at a used tractor and bargaining with the owner, everything negative can add up to your getting a better bargain. The time to praise the tractor is after you get it home and you can brag about the great deal you got./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Just make sure everthing works properly. You don't want to start your new ownership by having to fix your tractor or you would have been looking for an old 8N Ford or something like it.

Well... I went to see the tractor yesterday evening. It is very clean. The guy seemed to take real good care of it. However, he wants too much. He started @ $14.6k and came down a couple of K... Still way too much from all that I have heard both here and from other knowledgeable sources (plus comparing to what new costs). I left my name and number in case he decides to sell it cheaper... Who knows...

Thanks to all!

Nothin' like being a savvy buyer. You did the right thing and knew he was overpriced and by how much. Sounds to me like he is trying to "hook a fish" and you ain't biting. Nice job. Your observation that a new tractor isn't much more is very true. Now don't go away. Stay on this forum and you will find people who can help you with any tractor problem you have and you will soon be able to help others too. Your link was very good. That's just the kind of info this forum is best suited for. Welcome aboard. I hope you will be around for a long time./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif And happy 4th of July. *********

Thanks for all the posts JimI! I don't plan to go anywhere... I've been lurking quite regularly for the last few months (with an occasional "how much" question) and have learned quite a lot.

Now, I just have to find the right deal! :)

BTW, the guy with the 1910 was real nice... He just wanted more for the tractor than what it was worth (my opinion). Who knows, he may find someone to pay his price!?!? It seems like a good machine...
