1988 FORD 1910
I have a 88' Ford 1910 tractor. The other day I noticed that the battery light came on and was staying on. ( I replaced the battery with new interstate battery approx 6 months ago- when it failed at that time). I tested for alternator output at the battery and there was none.
I purchased a new alternator, installed, and retested for charging voltage at the battery. It started at approx 15 volts and climbed all the way to 17.7. Only ran for about 30 seconds to determine this, and have not run it since. I hooked up my battery charger to verify that the alternator wasn't "working harder" due to a drained battery. The battery was nearly full when hooked to charger. So I trickle charged it to completely full. I Ran the tractor after topping up the battery and still have approx 17v at the battery when running. Only other thing I can suspect is the Voltage Regulator. This regulator through the ford/new holland dealer is $107. Was hoping someone could assist me with how to test this regulator before I jump to replacing it. Any help/advice would be much appreciated!!

***up to this point, aside from replacing the battery, i have had no charging system issues with the tractor, and all of the charging system parts are original (with the exception of the alternator I just replaced).

And I bought the tractor new...

Thank You
Ry

bare with me there is chrysler regulator you can hook up in line and avoid the $107.00 regulator have done several over the past years really surprised they say they can get it it was obsoleted many years ago the last customer we had that ordered one received the ford regulator for 1970's car/truck alternator which is nowhere the same as yours your tractor was built in japan for ford it is so equipped with japanese components i will repost tommorrow the part number and can help you through this i have one of the alternators by my desk here i am waiting for customer to call me on now by it going to full field when you tested with volt meter is one test that surely indicated the regulator is not working and also you did have all the wiring hooked up when you tested the alternator

Thank You for the response. Being impatient as I am, I did order the regulator from the new holland/ford dealer. I had called a couple different dealers near me, which all came up with the same part number. Now I am concerned with what will show up. Last night I pulled to original regulator off, and the part number on the side of it is nowhere near the same as the dealer told me. Hopefully I will get lucky and it will be the same. I guess we will see tomorrow when it shows up. I would still really appreciate the chrysler info you had mentioned, because as you mentioned, I more than likely will be receiving the wrong part.

Thanks again,

Ry

What alt do you have, lets start there?

Have you checked the cnh parts site? Might be superseded numbers.

Keep us posted

The replacement alternator I purchased was at this link Amazon.com: DB Electrical AHI0074 Ford Holland Tractor Loader Alternator for Diesel Model 12127: Patio, Lawn & Garden .

I got the factory part number (for the regulator) from ford/new holland dealer, but had no luck online crossing numbers, so I just had them ship that one. I am concerned it will be wrong because the part number off of the regulator I removed is very different. Part number on old regulator is TL1Z-61D also says 12v 502 on it as well.

the tlz number appears to be correct if you google it look for a site that is a and b tractor parts now if the one they send you looks correct make sure the color coded wires are in the same slots if not do not destroy your old plug you can make it work l
just by rewiring it very simple just did one on an old wood chipper that regulator could not be found we had on the shelf same style but wires by color were wrong we cut off new plug wired in old plug with correct colored wires and away chipper went only took about 1 hour

Yeah, Mitch, I saw a few sites come up when I googled the part number, but everything I was finding looked like a different design (maybe just an updated design). This is an example of what I am coming up with: Voltage Regulator | Ford | Kubota | Yanmar | 1000 | 1310 | 1500 | 1510 | 1600 | 1700 | 1710 | 1900 | 1910 | 2110 | YM240 | YM330 | YM1500 | YM1700 | YM1900 | YM2000 | Replaces SBA1855 . The wiring and plug in look the same, but The regulator itself looks very different.

I will have to look at the connectors and see what they look like. I didn't have any luck with finding the A & B tractor parts site u had mentioned. Do you have a link?

Still have not received the regulator I ordered from ford dealer.

Last night I cleaned up the old voltage regulator, and after removing the 27 years of grass trimmings from it I found that 1 of the contacts that hooks to the resistor on the bottom side of the regulator had rusted through and was no longer attached. Upon touching it, the other contact on the opposite side of the resistor broke off as well. So I ran a jumper wire from the top side, to the bottom of the regulator (where the contacts broke) and soldered them in place so I could test it. Plugged it in, and now were charging at 14.3 constantly!

That makes me feel better about the regulator being the culprit, but I'm still concerned that what is going to show up from the ford dealer will not be correct. I could still use the old regulator, but the remainder of the contacts are in about the same condition as the first 2 that broke. Don't really want to change running this and having another one break and be back to charging at 17 volts...

Yesterday after crossing the part number from the old regulator (TL1Z-61D) ..I was able to get an o'reilly auto parts site to come up with (what their site claims to be ) an aftermarket regulator. It is a IMPORT DIRECT part number 29-0133. The body of the regulator looks exactly the same...and when I took the top off of it, the insides look the same as well. The connector looks the same, with 6 pins, but the underside has a plate on it (I'm assuming the plate is a newer design to keep debris from getting onto the contacts). It also appears that the wiring color is not the same, So tonight it is onto seeing if this o'relly part is actually the same set up as the original, wiring wise.

Thanks for the help everyone!

yeah just keep in mind if plug is wrong but you have the same amount of wires and all have proper color the connector can easily be replaced with your old just by cut and splice having to do a lot of this now because the part can be found maybe wired differently good luck

Tractor is back up and running- Charging at 13.6-14.3.

The part I got from ford was the correct part. It is aftermarket, but it was identical to what came off of the tractor originally. ( If your factory part numbered regulator is SBA185516030, And the number that is on the side of the regulator is TL1Z-61D.) = CNH BRAND AFTERMARKET PART NUMBER 83922416 - offered by Ford/New Holland Dealers. Thank You for all the help above!!
