Tractor
1988 John Deere 750
Hello Folks,

I have a 1988 John Deere 750 compact tractor. My question is regarding the clutch. I am trying to determine if it is a single stage or two stage clutch. The tractor currently operates as a single stage clutch. I have tried depressing the clutch only part way to see if it responds as a two stage clutch. It does not. Searching online has resulted in conflicting information. I have read responses that the tractor in question is definitely single, definitely two stage, and also that there was the option for single or two stage.

I was hoping that someone here might have some information on the subject. There is an "S" in the serial number which apparently means, "Sliding Transmission." I don't really know what that means, but I don't imagine it applies to my question.

My Tractor data;

1988 JD 750
4X4
Power Steering
Serial # *CH0750S026153*

Thanks for your assistance folks.

Jim

I owned a JD 750 for 20"years. It DOES NOT have a two stage clutch.

750's were only available with the single clutch

Thanks for your input. Appreciate it. Although I wish I had read that it did have a two stage clutch. Thanks again.

While on clutch subject, I just purchased a JD750, I have yet to pick it up. It has a clutch dragging issue. Original owner claims it has always done that. Researching the issue, folks suggest it may need a clutch, I have changed a fair number of clutches in my youth, worn they slip due to friction material and pressure plate wear to point of reduced pinch pressure and slip under load. Trying to understand how wear would keep it from releasing. Have not taken delivery so no trouble shooting done, adjustment is at top of list. Rear seal leak and oil build up could possibly cause issue.

Really not looking to split tractor as soon as I pick it up, though parts are reasonable if clutch is all that is needed.

Other question is regarding shift pattern, no markings on tractor and nothing in operators manual.

Welcome to TBN
IMHO clutch disk wear will not keep clutch from releasing. Dragging traction clutch could be caused by improper clutch pedal free travel, warped clutch plate, clutch hub splines rusty on input shaft or failed pilot brg.

Thanks Jim, I will hope for adjustment or rusty splines that maybe lubed. I will remain optimistic.
Have been told I can pick up tractor as early as tomorrow. It is 100 miles away and is another hundred to my place in Redding, ca where it is going.

Still chasing a shift pattern diagram, did not recall seeing anything cast into transmission case, checked operators manual and repair manual also looked at all the pictures of these tractors on line. The only thing I know for sure is reverse is back to the left or right.

Just went through the manuals again and find in the parts catalog a picture of the gear shift knob and it looks like the diagram is embossed with it on the top of the knob, can not make it out in the diagram in the IPC picture. Of course I am not near the tractor now and I may have missed this when first looking at the tractor, could be worn off or I may have had my hand over it when looking for it. Guess I will find out tomorrow when I pick up the tractor, with the dragging clutch issue I was hoping to not need to grind and crash every gear looking for the right one to load the beast onto a trailer.

Picked up the tractor yesterday, no markings on the shift knob. Can see where there was and old placard just aft of the lever but it has worn away long ago. I guess I will learn by trial and error where the gears are.
Took four hours to load tractor and drive it to Redding, Ca. not much time to play with it as I had to drive back to San Jose, Ca and go to work.
