My father in law called from his RV out on the road and said that the crankcase breather tube has begun dumping about 2 quarts of oil out every 100 miles. He said that it still has lots of power and sounds like it is running good.

We were wondering if he may have cracked a piston or ring. Not sure what would cause the sudden change in oil blow by.

Thought I would check if any of you have any ideas what to look for.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I have a '96 Cummins as well. I'd assume that it should be something fairly simple since I've never heard of anyone blowing a '96 12 valve Cummins model yet unless it has been subject to severe abuse and no maintenance. Go here http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=100
and post the question. You will have answers within the hour. Good luck!

Best take it to a certified repaire spot and let them tell the tale.

NOT A DODGE DEALER, NOT A DODGE DEALER, NOT A DODGE DEALER!!!

Take it to a Cummins Engine repair station, a "big truck" service depot. Dodge dealers will only screw it up further! I would imagine it is something simple.

Where does he get the truck serviced? Is there a possibility that it was over-filled with oil? If it was, this is where the oil will be spat out.

I surely agree with that. Some dealers will have competant staff but Cumins is a better bet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I took the liberty of posting your question on THE Cummins Diesel website. Turbodieselregister.com I'm sure the guys there will have some thoughts. Will forward the responses to you

I think this truck still has vacuum assisted brakes and if the vacuum pump hose splits (the hose runs from the vacuum pump (just in front of the power steering pump) to the brake booster (the big pancake thing behind where you add brake fluid) you can have blowby.

A turbo seal failure can cause blowby also.

I'll agree that it needs to go see a cummins dealer, there are too many simple and inexpensive things that could be wrong to let somebody unfamiliar with diesel engines loose on it.

The hoze should be covered by a recall.
