1996 ford new holland 1720 Hydraulic Oil change

This may be a dumb question, but is there any need to prime the hydraulics after a oil and filter change? I've done it before and it wasn't neccesary, but last night after the oil and filter change the hydraulics wouldn't come back on line. I did find the oil filter was the wrong spin on and may be the problem. I just wanted to ask in case i have to prime the system tommorow once the correct filter is in place.

If the pump IN port is flooded you don't have to prime.

I would fill the filter before installing.
