Last month I sold my Ford tractor and picked up a 1997 5300 from a local farmer.

In the last week, it has developed a miss or chug at all throttle positions.

I have yet to change the fuel filter, and am hoping that's the problem.

Has anyone experience this symptom or have insight on it?

Thanks in advance!

Not a lot of info to go one here. Change the fuel filters and report back.:)

As said before a little more detail is needed. I am guessing a little maintenance would be a good place to start.

I would start with the fuel filter. Couple things here, fill the tank, fill the filter BEFORE putting on, this might keep you from having to bleed it. To be safe make sure you know how to bleed tractor before putting on the new filter.

At the back of the tank there is a drain valve I would open that and see what comes out. There may be water and sediment at the bottom of the tank.

Check/clean/replace the air filters.

Depending on the hours and maintenance previous did, I would consider adding a fuel conditioner.

Go to jdparts.com and sign-up for free and you will get access to parts catalog and parts cost. You may want to get a tech. manual take a look at selectmanuals.com ($30.00)

Thanks for the input guys!

Sorry about the delay! I finally had a chance this morning to work on this thing.

I started by draining 1/4 gallon of fuel from rear draincock on the fuel tank. The fuel was clean, with no debris. Next, I removed the fuel filter and primer pump mechanism. I noticed the primer button was angled down, sort of jammed. Upon removing the filter, there was some debris in the filter casing. I cleaned everything, removed the rubber inlet fuel line and checked for flow, primed the new filter, and reassembled everything. I noticed the primer button was up.

I started the tractor with no problems. After idling at 1000 rpm's it stalled. I repeated this two times. Finally, I got off the tractor to look for leaks... I saw none. Then I noticed the primer button was down. I loosened the plastic primer ring to allow air in, and the button rose. I started the tractor and watched the button go down as the tractor stalled.

Is the button supposed to be down? What is causing this? Could this be a infamous check valve issue?

Thanks in advance!!

I just looked, and see no sign of a check valve. The line runs directly from the lower left side of the fuel tank to the filter.

Looking at JDparts, both the 5300 and my 5210 use the same hand primer RE50467 $70. My hand primer does not go down.

Take the hose from the tank going to filter loose. Blow compressed air lightly into the hose to clear the tank pickup. Mine does this every couple of years to me. When you stop blowing air, the fuel should pour out.

Oh forgot. I started running sea foam every few tanks and it has been over the normal period since it gave me any trouble.

Good news guys!

I removed the filter, loosened the flexible inlet line, and removed hard line from filter head to the injection pump. I forced a little compressed air through all of those... You would believe the amount of particulate that came out of the filter head: sand, bugs, and hay. Crazy! I buttoned everything up, bled the lines and she fired right up.

She has never sounded so good! I just cut 30 acres of hay with her too, just to be sure!

I appreciate the help guys!

I'm going to start using Seafoam too!

And 5210, a tech manual will purchased next paycheck!
