I am in need of a tractor!

My wife and I have been building a house for 5 years (she is paralyzed and needed a custom house ... we could only afford one if I did most of the work myself).

I now have a LOT of landscaping, clearing, driveway ..... work to do. I got prices from local excavators ... $8K to $10K ..ouch!

Plus it takes me 5 plus hours to cut the lawn with my little riding mower.

The neighbor (farmer) felt so sorry for me watching me did 200 ft of trench by hand that he lent me a little two behind backhoe.

Anyway .... I have come to the conclusion that I need a tractor with a backhoe and finish mower.

I was hoping to say under $10K for a total investment.

Everything I am finding is seems to be in the $15K to $20K range .... out of my budget.

I found a 1999 Belarus 5145 ... 4x4 .... 55hp ..... just over 1000 hours ... needs front tires ... bucket ... no backhoe or mower (I will need to pick these up later).

He was asking $10,800 with a disc. I think he said the disc was worth about $1K

So say almost $10K for just the tractor and loader.

Still out of my budget but I was hoping to talk him down a bit.

What is this tractor worth?

I can't find any real comparisons.

Should I even look at a Belarus or ?????

You don’t list any field work (plowing or mowing pastures) that would necessitate a 55 hp tractor.
It sounds to me like you need a small TLB and a 6’ rear finish mower. Something like an LS MT125 with a backhoe. You can find new ones with a loader, mid mower, and backhoe for under $18k. I bet you could find something similar with under 500 hours for about $12k.
This one is the first one that showed up on tractor house.

No field work ... will a 25 hp be enough for a backhoe and a fair bit of landscaping (dirt, crushed stone, ....)?

I was looking this way orginally but got worried it might be too small for things like fixing a driveway ... though I would only do this once ... I would bet most of it's life it will cut 3 acres of lawn.

Thanks ... Mike

Tractor size is really about how quickly you need to perform each task. Any front loader will move stone or mulch. How much do you need to move each trip? Any backhoe will dig a hole you’d be hard pressed to climb out of. How deep do you need to go and how fast do you need to do it? If you need a 2’ wide trench, a larger hoe that can run a 24” bucket may be the right size for you.

A good quality box blade, properly sized to the tractor, should do the same work as a larger combo...just narrower swaths at a time. That goes for any task really.
I think small implements get a bad rap due to many people buying the cheapest ones they can find vs. high quality implements.
I think that is mostly because most people buying Scuts are first time tractor owners and dealers tend to add on cheaper implements to help make the sale. The tractor is pretty useless by itself. Its the attachments/implements that do the work. Better quality ones just work better. A lot of people think all box blades are the same. They aren’t. Do your research and get the best quality attachments you can and size them to the tractor.

I know a lot of people buy small at first and then realize down the road they should have bought bigger initially, and then they take a bath when trying to sell the small implements and move up. So you do want to make sure you are willing to live with whatever size tractor you buy.
